Muirkirk
is a small town which lies 24 miles inland from Ayr close to the Lanarkshire
border. Cairn Table is the highest of the hills which dominate the moorland
landscape to the south of Muirkirk, rising 593m above sea level. The
memorial is at the top of Cairn Table and was constructed by hand in
1920. No names appear on the exterior but are encased inside in a box.
This box contains the names of the 349 men and women who served in the
1914-18 War. The names of the 87 who were killed are marked on the scroll
with a black cross. There is also a smaller box inside which contains
the names of the people who made at least two trips up the hill carrying
stones for the construction. Prior to this memorial being built there
were two large cairns on the summit; one remains largely intact, but
the other was heavily robbed of stone to build the monument to the people
of Muirkirk who fought in the 1914-1918 war.
