The War Memorial is situated in St Botolph’s Parish Church as well as a printed Roll of Honour. Information was kindly supplied by the Vicar, The Rev. Graham Bradshaw, which is used during the Remembrance Sunday Service. This notes the Regiment and date of death of the serviceman. There are some discrepancies between this information and that on CWGC. The memorial is now located in a different posotion along with a new metal pillar Roll of Honour.

In the 1911 census he was aged 15, at school, born Aspley Guise, Bedfordshire, resident with his parents at Mount Pleasant, Aspley Guise, Bedfordshire. Downes, of Aspley House, Aspley Guise, Bedfordshire., and the late Lt. Col. C. V. Downes. His brother, Villiers Chernocke Downes also fell. Volume 1, Part 1 , Page 116, DOWNES, Archer Chernocke, 2nd Lieut, 1st Battalion Cheshire Regiment. 4th youngest and last surviving son of the late Lieut-Col Villers Somerville Downes of Aspley House, Aspley Guise, co Beds, East Lancashire (59th) Regiment, by his wife Catherine Elizabeth Anne, dau and heir of Frederick Thompson, of Wimbledon Park.

Born Aspley House aforesaid 5-8-1892. educated The Knoll, Woburn Sands, Winchester College and Trinity College Oxford. Obtained his commission in the 1st Battalion Cheshire Regiment 2-9-1913 went to France with the first Expeditionary Force and died at Poperinghe, Flanders 20-11-1914, of wounds received in action at Neuve Eglise, near Bailleul. He had left the trench to help a wounded man when he was shot.He was unmarried and was buried in Poperinghe Cemetery. His brother Lieut V.C Downes was killed in action 18-10-14.

Lieutenant 1st Bn., Bedfordshire Regiment. Died of wounds Sunday 18 October 1914. Age 23. Son of Catherine E.A. Downes, of Aspley House, Aspley Guise, Bedfordshire., and the late Lt. Col. C. Villiers Downes. His brother, Archer Chernocke Downes also fell. Buried in LONGUENESSE (ST. OMER) SOUVENIR CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Ref. I. A. 7.

Volume 1, Part 1 , Page 116, DOWNES, Villers Chernocke. Lieutenant, 1st Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment. 3rd and elder surviving son of the late Lieut-Col Charles Villers Somerville Downes of Aspley House, Aspley Guise, co Beds, East Lancashire (59th) Regiment, by his wife Catherine Elizabeth Anne dua of Frederick Thompson of Wimbledon Park (see previous notice).

Born Aspley House aforesaid 5-3-1891, educated The Knoll, Woburn Sands, Winchester College and Trinity College Oxford, and was gazetted to the 3rd Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment (TF) 15-7-1913. On the outbreak of war he was posted to the first Battalion 4-8-1914 , went to France with the First Expeditonary Force , served through the retreat from Mons and the Battle of the Marne and was instumental in saving three guns.

He died at St Omer 18-10-1914 of wounds received in action and was buried in the cemetery there, unmarried. Lieutenant Downes had passed as a musketry instructor, and was nearly due for his Captaincy.

Volume 1, Part 1 , Page 319. SARGEAUNT, Arthur Frederick. Lieut - Colonel, Royal Engineers. Eldest son of Col. Richard Arthur Sargeaunt of Aspley Guise co. Beds, late R.E. by his wife Emily Alberta, dau of Charles Sargeaunt, J.P. Born Bombay 1-11-1870, educated Marlborough College and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Gazetted 2nd Lieut 14-2-1890 and promoted Lieutenant 4-2-1893, Captain 13-2-1901, Major 14-2-1910, and Brevet Lieut-Col for his services 1915.

Served in the South African war 1899-1902 took part in the operations in Cape Colony 30-11-1900 to 31-5-1902 (Queens Medal with clasp and Kings Medal with 2 clasps). Was Instructor at the school of Military Engineering from 1-10-1908 to 13-2-1910.

Went to France 8-9-1914 in command of a field company, was subsequently appointed Commanding Royal Engineer of a division and was killed in action near Ypres 31-7-1915. Buried at Brandhock. He was twice mentioned in F.M. Sir (now Lord) Frenchs despatches (London Gazette 17-2-1915 & 22-6-1915 ) .

He married at St Thomas church, Edinburgh, 9-5-1906, Clare Marguerite, dau of Andrew Smart of Edinburgh, M.D., L.L.D., F.R.C.P.E.,and had two daughters Hilda Clare born 13-2-1907, and Aileen Marguerite born 18-2-1909.

SARGEAUNT

Lieutenant Colonel, 16th Heavy Artillery Group, Royal Garrison Artillery. Killed in action Friday 15 June 1917. Age 44. Son of Col. R. A. Sargeaunt, of Aspley Guise, Bedfordshire.; husband of Norah Millicent Sargeaunt. of "Eagle Dene," Foxholes Rd., Southbourne, Bournemouth. Buried in BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION (NORD), Nord, France. Ref. III. C. 264.

Volume 2, Part 4, Page 177 - SARGEAUNT, Herbert Gaussen - Lieut-Col, Royal Garrison Artillery

Eldest surviving son of R.A.Sergeaunt, of Westridge, Aspley Guise,co. Bedford, by his wife Emily Alberta, dau. of Charles Sergeaunt; born 7th Feb, 1873; educated Marlborough, and The Royal Military Academy, Woolwich; gazetted 2nd Lieut, 1st April, 1893; promoted Lieutenant 1896; Capt 7th March, 1900; Major 1st April, 1914. Between the years 1893-1902 he served in Gibraltar, India, Aden and Singapore, where he was appointed Divisional Adjutant, Royal Artillery, Straits Settlements; invalided home in 1902; on recovery served in Ireland as Adjutant to the Cork Artillery, R.G.A. (Militia), at Gosport and at Plymouth; was appointed Staff officer at Lydd for six months, after which he went through the gunnery staff course at Woolwich and Shoeburyness, and afterwards filled successfuly the appointments of Instructor in gunnery at Ceylon, and major Instructor in Gunnery at Hong Kong, and D.A.A. and Q.M.G. China Command. While holding the last appointment was ordered home to command and train a siege battery; served with The Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from March 1916 and was killed in action near Armentieres 14th June, 1917. Buried at Bailleul. He was twice mentioned in despatches by F. M. Sir Douglas Haig for gallant and distinguished service in the field. He married at Bournemouth, 10th Sept,1902, Norah Milicent, dau.of Robert Dunman, and had two daus,: Ena Norah born 17th Oct, 1903 and Gwyneth Maude, born 24th Jan, 1915.

Special Note: HMS Pathfinder was a light cruiser. She was patrolling the Scottish North Sea coast on 5th September 1914, when she was torpedoed by SM U 21 captained by Otto Hersing. Pathfinder was the first British warship to be sunk by a submarine. Only 11 of her crew survived.

WADE

Anthony John
Able Seaman C/JX 336396, H.M.S. President III (lost in M.V. Peter Maersk), Royal Navy. Died Monday 7 December 1942. Age 19. Son of Thomas and Nellie Wade, of Woburn Sands, Buckinghamshire. Commemorated on CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL, Kent, United Kingdom. Ref. 56, 3. Special Note: HMS President III was a Naval Gunnery training base, where Royal Naval seamen were trained to man guns on Merchant Navy ships, known at DEMS (Defence Equipped Merchant Ships). The MV Peter Maersk had been requisitioned by the Ministry of War transport, and was sailing (not in a convoy) from Liverpool to Aden via Cape Town. She was torpedoed in the Atlantic west of the Azores. There were no survivors.
