The
Memorial stands on the green in the centre of Biddenham village and
takes the form of a small Celtic cross on a plinth with a three-stepped
base. There are 10 names for World War 1 and 3 for World War 2. It was
unveiled and dedic ated 18th May 1922; the buolders were Messrs. S W
Jarvis & Son and the designer was F L Griggs. There are also two
memorials in the church of St James, one for World War 1 and the other
World War 2. The names are identical on the church and village memorials.

Volunteering
in September 1914, he proceeded to the Western front on completing
his training in the following year, and there took part in
the Battles of Festubert, Loos and Arras and other engagements
was wounded on the Somme in 1916. He was killed in action
at Vimy Ridge on April 23rd, 1917. He was entitled to the
1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.

12th Battalion, Canadian Engineers. Died 3rd November 1918. Aged
28. Son of Rev. William and Blanche Shaw, of Stapleton, Bristol,
England; husband of Annie C. Shaw (nee Strong), of Military Hospital,
Quebec. Enlisted as Captain but became Major, 2nd Army Troops
Company. Born 10th February 1891 at Stapleton, Bristol. At the
time of his Officer Declaration, 1st October 1915 at Ottowa, Ontario,
his father was resident at 16 Rothsay Road, Bedford and he was
already in the Canadian Engineers. He was Church of England. In
the 1911 census he was aged 20, born Stapleton, Bristol, son of
William Henry and Blanche Shaw, resident Woodleigh, the Park,
Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Buried in VALENCIENNES (ST. ROCH)

National Archives the battalion diary for that day:

Nov 1918
"B” Company filled enters at E.8.c.2.4. and E.2.d.1.9.,
and repaired the road from E.16.b.1.3. to E.5.c.2.5. making it
fit for two—way lorry traffic.
"C" Company continued the search for booby traps in
VALENCIENNES but did not find any.
"D" Company replaced stop logs in lock at E.14.b.0.5.
to prevent too much water flowing; north, and thus cause further
floods there.
"C" Company moved their Headquarters to VALENCIENNES.
Battalion Headquarters moved to ANZIN in the morning.
Major SHAW went forward on a motor cycle about 1400 hours to make
a reconnaissance of the forward roads in ST. SAULVE and beyond,
if possible. As he had not returned by 230O hours he was reported
to 4th Brigade, C.E., as missing.
Lieut. G. O. PRICE proceeded to EDINBURGH to 14 days leave.
Lieut W. S. LAWRENCE joined the battalion as a reinforcement.
