BIDDENHAM WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The Memorial stands on the green in the centre of Biddenham village and takes the form of a small Celtic cross on a plinth with a three-stepped base. There are 10 names for World War 1 and 3 for World War 2. It was unveiled and dedic ated 18th May 1922; the buolders were Messrs. S W Jarvis & Son and the designer was F L Griggs. There are also two memorials in the church of St James, one for World War 1 and the other World War 2. The names are identical on the church and village memorials.

Private G/21037, 8th Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Killed in action Friday 10th August 1917 in France & Flanders. Born 10 October 1897 Biddenham, resident Ford End, Bedford, enlisted Bedford. Admitted to Biddenham National School 26 July 1901, son of Frank Armstrong, of Ford End, Biddenham, left 9 October 1901. Re-admitted to Biddenham National School 26 May 1902, son of Frank Armstrong, of Ford End, Biddenham, left 4 November 1910 exemption certificate applied. No known grave. DAVISON John
Lance Corporal 86703, 6th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), formerly Dm/2/231872, Royal Army Service Corps. Died of wounds 8th June 1918 in France & Flanders. Born 5 October 1897, and resident, Biddenham, enlisted Bedford. Admitted to Biddenham National School 4 March 1901, son of William Davidson, of Biddenham. DUDLEY Alfred

Private 12766, 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action Monday 23rd April 1917 in France & Flanders. Born Haynes, enlisted Bedford, resident Biddenham. No known grave. Commemorated on ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 5.

DUDLEY, A., Private, 1st Bedfordshire Regiment.

Volunteering in September 1914, he proceeded to the Western front on completing his training in the following year, and there took part in the Battles of Festubert, Loos and Arras and other engagements was wounded on the Somme in 1916. He was killed in action at Vimy Ridge on April 23rd, 1917. He was entitled to the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.

Private 7547 1st Bn., Northamptonshire Regiment who was killed in action on Sunday, 20th August 1916. Aged 29. Born Kettering, enlisted Northampton. Son of George Plain; husband of Mary Elizabeth Plain, of Kennet Terrace, Brixworth, Northants. Native of Bedford. Commemorated in BAZENTIN-LE-PETIT COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Somme, France. RIDDY Thomas William
Lance Corporal 1090, 2/1st East Anglian Division, 486th Field Company, Corps of Royal Engineers. Died at home Thursday 24th June 1915. Aged 33. Resident Biddenham, enlisted Bedford. Son of Jeremiah and Fanny Riddy, of Stagsden, Bedfordshire; husband of M. J. Riddy, of Avenue Cottage, Biddenham, Bedford. Buried in STAGSDEN (ST. LEONARD) CHURCHYARD, north of Church. Private 60202, 101st Company, Labour Corps. Died Friday, 31st January 1919. Aged 28. Son of Thomas and Kate Rowney, of Stevington, Bedford; husband of Emily Rowney, of Church End, Biddenham, Bedford. Buried in BELGRADE CEMETERY, Namur, Namur, Belgium. Plot V. Row B. Grave 3.
SHAW Giles Havergal
Lieutenant, 5th Battalion (Territorial), Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action Wednesday 11th April 1917. In the 1911 census he was aged 17, born Stapleton, Bristol, at school, son of William Henry and Blanche Shaw, resident Woodleigh, the Park, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. No known grave. SHAW Greville Havergal

[Listed as Lieutenant Colonel on CWGC but Major on Canadian records] Major, 12th Battalion, Canadian Engineers. Died 3rd November 1918. Aged 28. Son of Rev. William and Blanche Shaw, of Stapleton, Bristol, England; husband of Annie C. Shaw (nee Strong), of Military Hospital, Quebec. Enlisted as Captain but became Major, 2nd Army Troops Company. Born 10th February 1891 at Stapleton, Bristol. At the time of his Officer Declaration, 1st October 1915 at Ottowa, Ontario, his father was resident at 16 Rothsay Road, Bedford and he was already in the Canadian Engineers. He was Church of England. In the 1911 census he was aged 20, born Stapleton, Bristol, son of William Henry and Blanche Shaw, resident Woodleigh, the Park, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. From the Canadian National Archives the battalion diary for that day:

3 Nov 1918
"B” Company filled enters at E.8.c.2.4. and E.2.d.1.9., and repaired the road from E.16.b.1.3. to E.5.c.2.5. making it fit for two—way lorry traffic.
"C" Company continued the search for booby traps in VALENCIENNES but did not find any.
"D" Company replaced stop logs in lock at E.14.b.0.5. to prevent too much water flowing; north, and thus cause further floods there.
"C" Company moved their Headquarters to VALENCIENNES.
Battalion Headquarters moved to ANZIN in the morning.
Major SHAW went forward on a motor cycle about 1400 hours to make a reconnaissance of the forward roads in ST. SAULVE and beyond, if possible. As he had not returned by 230O hours he was reported to 4th Brigade, C.E., as missing.
Lieut. G. O. PRICE proceeded to EDINBURGH to 14 days leave.
Lieut W. S. LAWRENCE joined the battalion as a reinforcement.

Private 40670, 4th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment formerly 45180, Suffolk Regiment. Killed in action Tuesday 30th October 1917 in France & Flanders. Aged 19. Born Kempston, resident Biddenham, enlisted Bedford. Son of Frederick and Eliza Wright, of Duck End, Biddenham, Bedford. No known grave. Pilot Officer 42697 608 Squadron, Royal Air Force who died on Sunday, 1st September 1940. Aged 27. Son of Edward Cecil and Olive Agnes Creed, of Biddenham. No known grave. Commemorated on RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL, Surrey. Panel 7.
