                  Dunstable. In 1932, on the death of his mother, he went to live 
                  with his elder brother, Sgt. Leslie Tompkins, Bedfordshire Constabulary, 
                  at Box End Police Station, Kempston. Pupil at Bedford Modern 
                  School. In 1935 indentured as Merchant Marine Sea Apprentice 
                  on MV Erodore, London and in 1940 Sub-Lieut., Royal Naval Reserve, 
                  on Atlantic Convoy duty. In December 1941 married Margaret Sandell 
                  at Bedford. At the time of his death he was a pupil at No. 1 
                  SFTS, RAF Station Netheravon, Wiltshire. Buried in KEMPSTON
