Photograph
of the original “Illuminated Scroll” (size approx 3 feet x 2 feet) which
hung for about 40 years in The Parade Room at Luton Police Station. The
Scroll has now vanished.
We
acknowledge with thanks Tom Madigan who allowed us to use the photograph
of the Memorial taken from his book “The Men Who Wore Straw Helmets”,
Policing Luton 1840 – 1974, and who owns the Copyright, and also Ralph
Miller who obtained the photograph.
To
the best of our knowledge, two Luton Policemen died in World War 1.
Only one, James Chandler, is indicated on the Scroll. William Byron
died in 1920 obviously after the scroll was drawn up.

Lance Corporal P/10790, Foot Branch, Military Police formerly 2070,
Royal Army Medical Corps attached to Second Army. Died on service
26 February 1919. Aged 24. Born, resident and enlisted Luton. Son
of Mr. and Mrs. George Chandler, of Northchurch, Berkhampsted; husband
of Elizabeth Sarah Chandler, of 140, George St., Berkhampsted, Herts.
Buried in COLOGNE SOUTHERN CEMETERY, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.
