Lieutenant, 7th (Queen's Own) Hussars. Died of wounds 8th November 1918. Aged 24. Son of the Rt. Hon. Rowland Edmund Prothero, 1st Baron Ernle, of 3, Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, London and Oakley House, Oakley, Bedfordshire. Buried in BAGHDAD (NORTH GATE) WAR CEMETERY, Iraq. Plot IX. Row C. Grave 6. BOWYER Stanley John

Private 41882, "A" Company, 7th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment killed in action on Thursday, 8th August 1918. Age 28. Born Oakley, enlisted Bedford. Son of Arthur and Emily Bowyer, of 75, Chip Hill, Oakley. Commemorated on VIS-EN-ARTOIS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 4

BOWYER, S. J., Private, 7th Norfolk Regiment.

Three months after volunteering in November 1915 he was drafted to France. where he saw much severe fighting and took part in the Battles of the Somnie, Arias, Messines, Ypres and Cambrai and other engagements in various sectors of the front. He fell in action near Ribecourt on August 8th, 1918. He was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals.

EATON Reginald Charles
Private 22216, 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment killed in action on Wednesday, 19th April 1916. Age 19. Born and resident Oakley, enlisted Ampthill. Son of Joseph Charles and Miriam Louisa Eaton, of 57, Brown's Wood Cottage, Oakley. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 31 and 33
HART Harry James Watson
Lance Corporal 40201m 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment who died on Thursday, 21st March 1918. Age 28. Son of Joseph and Emily Hart, of 37, Gardeners Cottage, Oakley. Commemorated on POZIERES MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Panel 23 and 24. In Oakley cemetery there is a grave that states that he was in the 2nd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment and his parents were Parents Joseph and Susannah.

HURST Charles William

Private G/19517 7th Battalion, Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) killed in action on Friday, 12th October 1917. Born Oakley, resident and enlisted Chesterfield, Derbys. Son of Arthur and Annie Hurst. Formerly 83236, Sherwood Foresters. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 106 to 108. Also commemorated on his parents grave in Oakley Cemetery.

HURST, C. W., Private, Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment).

He joined in April 1917, and was quickly drafted to France. During his short period of service on the Western Front, he was in action at the Battles of Messines and Lens, but shortly afterwards was reported missing, and is now presumed to have been killed in action on October 12th, 1917. He was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals.

Private 050112, No. 9 Sect. (York), Royal Army Ordnance Corps. Died 31st October 1920. Aged 20. Son of John and Catherine Knight, of 61, Station Rd., Oakley. Buried in St Mary's churchyard, Oakley.

KNIGHT, W J., Private, R.A.O.C.

He joined in June 1918, and, after completing a period of training, was retained on important duties with his unit at various stations. Owing to the early cessation of hostilities he was not successful in obtaining his transfer to a theatre of war, but, nevertheless, rendered valuable services until demobiised in October 1919.

LINE Frank Goodman

Serjeant 9587 2nd Battalion, Border Regiment who died of wounds on Tuesday, 27th October 1914. Age 25. Born and resident Oakley, enlisted Northchurch, Herts. Son of the late John Goodman Line and Charlotte Sarah Line, of 54, Oakley. Commemorated YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 35. Brother below.

LINE, F. G., Sergeant, 2nd Border Regiment.

A Regular soldier, who was serving at the outbreak of war, he was sent to France in October 1914, but after fighting at La Bassée was severely wounded ou Octobr 26th, during the first Battle of Ypres. He unhappily succumbed to his injuries the following day. He was entitled to the 1914 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.

LINE Thomas Charles

Private 13351 "A" Company, 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment killed in action on Thursday, 6th May 1915. Age 23. Son of the late John Goodman Line and Charlotte Sarah Line, of 54, Oakley, Bedford; husband of Olivia Lilian Line, of 47, Ashburnham Rd., Bedford. Born Oakley, resident and enlisted Bedford. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 31 and 33. Brother above.

LINE, T. C., Private, 1st Bedfordshire Regiment.

Eight mouths after volunteering he was sent to France in April 1915, and served on the Arras front. Transferred soon afterwards to the Ypres salient, he was unhappily killed in action during a gas-attack on May 6th, only a few weeks after his arrival tn France. He was entitled to the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.

PANTER, F., Private, 2nd East Lancashire Regt.

When war broke out he was serving in Africa, but was immediately recalled and embarked for France in September 1914. He took a prominent part in the Battles of Ypres and Neuve Chapelle, but was unhappily killed in action at St. Eloi on March 14th, 1915. He was entitled to the 1914 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.

possibly: Arthur William Parker, Pte 235244 of 1/5th Royal Warkwickshire Regiment who was killed in action on 15th June 1918 and is buried in Magnaboschi British Cemetery, Italy, II:C:10. He had formerly served as 660 Huntingdon Cyclists Battalion, 43028 Bedfordshire Regiment and 268173 Hertfordshire Regiment. He was born in Godmanchester the son of Harry and Rose Parker.
