Enlisted London. Following is the entry from De Ruvigny’s Vol.
II. “ Private No. 11253. 1st Battn. (71st Foot) The
Highland Light Infantry. S. of William Bryant, of Warren Lodge,
Old Warden, Biggleswade; b. Biggleswade, co. Bedford. 30 Dec. 1887;
educ. There; enlisted 19 April, 1907; went to India with his battalion
the following Sept., and from there joined the Expeditionary Force
in France in Nov, 1914, the battalion being a unit of the Sirhind
Brigade of the Indian E.F.; killed in action at La Bassee 20 Dec.
1914. Buried at Festubert. The Highland Light Infantry Chronicle,
referring to the action in which he fell, said: “We are indeed
proud of the name the good old Highland Light Infantry have gained,
and proud of the lads who have fought so well and taken our places
so nobly. They have many, many times wiped out the memory of the
disaster that overtook us and those of our gallant comrades who
fell on the 19th and 20th of December”. Unm.”
Commemorated on Brown’s Road Military Cemetery, Festubert, Pas-de-Calais,
