        The 
          Memorial stands on the junction of Oakley Road and Church Lane, Pavenham. 
          It takes the form of a stone cross mounted on a stone plinth which, 
          in turn, stands on two concrete plinths. Mounted on the face of the 
          memorial cross is a Sword of Sacrifice. There are eleven names for World 
          War 1 and sevena for World War 2. The names for World War 2 are on an 
          additional plaque, the names for World War 1 are insribed into the memorial's 
          stone plinth. The memorial was unveiled by Dr John Linnell and dedicated 
          by the Reverend K A Keable on 14th November 1920. The memorial was built 
          by Messrs S W Jarvis & Son and the architect was mr George P Allen. 
          The site of the memorial was donated by George Lawson-Johnston. An article 
          relating to the memorial appeared in the Bedfordshire Times & Independent 
          on Friday 19 November 1920.

              Monday, 26th March 1917. Born Bedford, enlisted Bedford. Formerly 
              20265 Bedfordshire Regiment.Commemorated on the same headstone as 
              R McCLINNELL. Symbolic gravestone erected by the Commonwealth War 
              Graves Commission as they were not allowed to erect these at the 
              real place of burial which was in Pavenham (St. Peter) Churchyard, 
              Bedfordshire. Special Memorial. Grave 385. Captain Robert Linnell’s 
              father who was the Vicar at the time at Pavenham who took the service 
              and both men are actually buried at Pavenham. |

              Aged 32. Son of John and Elizabeth Elliot Lawson Johnston, of 26, 
              Great Cumberland Place, Marble Arch, London. B.A. Trinity (Cambridge). 
              Awarded the Military Cross (M.C.). In the 1911 census he was aged 
              25, a Barrister, son of Elizabeth Lawson-Johnston (a widow), born 
              London, S.W., resident Addington Manor, Winslow, Buckinghamshire. 
              Buried in GROVE TOWN CEMETERY, MEAULTE, Somme, France. Plot III.

               Captain, Royal Army Medical Corps. Died Wednesday 17 March 1915. 
              Born Burton on Trent, Staffordshire. Educated at Bedford Modern 
              School (1889-99. In the 1891 census he was aged 10, a scholar, resident 
              with his parents, John E and Emmeline E Linnell, in Main Street, 
              Pavenham, Bedford. In the 1901 census he was aged 20, a Medical 
              Student (Cambridge), resident with his parents, John E and Emmeline 
              E Linnell, at The Vicarage, Main Street, Pavenham, Bedford. Commemorated 
              on the same headstone as W HUCKLE in Bedford Cemetery. Symbolic 
              gravestone erected by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as 
              they were not allowed to erect these at the real place of burial 
              which was in Pavenham (St. Peter) Churchyard, Bedfordshire. Special

              Private 66413 - subsequently renumbered 104708, 1st/6th Battalion 
              (Territorial), Northumberland Fusiliers. Died Thursday 11 April 
              1918, in Belgium probably at Estaires; he took a colleague to a 
              dressing station, walked out and was never seen again. Born 3 May 
              1899 Born 3rd May 1899 at Carshalton, Surrey 7th child of John William 
              Bird Robinson and Annie Sewell Joyce (5 siblings born at West End 
              Farm, Kempston), enlisted Harrow, Middlesex. Also educated at Pavenham 
              Church of England / Lower School, Pavenham, Bedfordshire (1902-08), 
              Stevington British/Lower School (1909) then Bedford Modern School 
              (1912-14). In the 1901 census he was aged 1, born Sutton, Surrey, 
              resident with his parents in West Cottage, Main Street, Pavenham, 
              Bedford. No known grave. Commemorated on PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL, Hainaut,
