WAR MEMORIAL
World
War 1 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The
memorial is located in the churchyard by the path that leads to the
church from the gate at The Parish Church of St James the Apostle, on
Church Road, Pulloxhill. The memorial takes the form of a Celtic cross,
on a battered pillar, which surmounts a battered pedestal on a base.
The entire memorial is surrounded by deep chamfered kerb stones. Unfortunately
much of the lettering is virtually unreadable. What can be read indicates
that full name, rank, and date and place of death are recorded. There
are 8 names listed for World War 1 and 5 names for World War 2. The
memorial was made byS W Jarvis & Son of Bedford. it was deicated
by The Vicar Reverend A E Houfe and unveiled by Mr A H Wingfield of
Ampthill on 8 August 1920.

Mr.
and Mrs. Levi Evans have had a second bereavement, not long after
the death of their son, the late Pte. Ernest Evans, Royal Fusiliers,
who served France for 18 months and sustained wounds in the leg,
besides a permanently affected constitution. His sister, Miss Olive
Evans, aged 18, has now passed away at Brompton Hospital, and it
is feared she contracted illness from her brother. The funeral took
place on Saturday, at Pulloxhill Church. The Rev. A. E. Houfe conducted
an Impressive service, which included three hymns, and the Dead
March, played Miss E Stanley. The chief mourners were:— The
father and mother. Mr. S Evans (brother), Mrs. G. Hill (and husband)
sister; Mrs. Taylor, of Flitwick (aunt). Mrs. C. Aylen, Miss N.
Parker, Mrs. Houfe. and Mr. W. Stanley. Pte. Ernest Evans name is,
we understand, to be added to the roll of honour engraved on the
village memorial. |
