SUNDON VILLAGE WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The War memorial stands by the side of the village main street at the junction of Church Road and State Hall, 7, Church Road, Upper Sundon. The memorial takes the form of a Portland stone obelisk mounted on a pedestal with a bronze plate below it with painted letters; the whole stands on two stone plinths and concrete base set in paved area enclosed in iron railings. There are 21 names for World War 1 and one for World War 2.

In the 1911 census he was aged 21, born Sundon, Beds, a Farm Labourer, son of George and Ann Horsler, resident Great Bramingham, Streatley, Luton, Bedfordshire. No known grave. Married Alice Maud Billington in the July to September Quarter 1904 in Luton Registration District and they had five children; moved to Sharpenhoe. In the 1911 census he was aged 28, born new Barnes, Sundon, beds, a Horseman on farm, married to Alice Horsler with three sons and one daughter, resident Sharpenhoe Streatley, Bedfordshire. Buried in Guillemont Road Cemetery, Somme, France. Plot IX. Row C. Grave 8.

In the 1911 census he was aged 12, at school, born Abbots Bromley, Staffordshire, son of Alfred Joseph and Harriet Tomlinson, resident Sundon, Dunstable, Bedfordshire. No known grave.
