World
War 1 & 2 - Detailed information
Compiled
and Copyright © Eric & Tim Pugh 2009
The
War Memorial is to be found at Hay-on-Wye in Powys, Wales that was,
before 1947, known as Hay and was then in the old Welsh County of Brecknockshire.
The memorial was unveiled in 1920 in Castle Square, Hay and was dedicated
to the men of Hay and Cusop (in Herefordshire) who had fallen in the
Great War. Cusop is a small hamlet just outside Hay but over the Welsh/English
border. Cusop has a separate War
Memorial wall mounted tablet within the local church of St. Mary.
The names of the men from Cusop are duplicated on the Hay Memorial.
The memorial at Hay was moved from the centre of Castle Square into
a niche in the castle wall in 1950. The names of the fallen from World
War II were added in 1947. At Hay there is also a Blessed Sacrament
Memorial chapel within the Hay Parish Church of St. Mary containing
the names of the fallen from both wars. The Chapel was given by the
parents of Lt. C. G. N. Morris who had been killed on the Somme on 7th
October 1916. Lt. Morris’s father was a local school headmaster.
Also within this chapel is a hand written list of the details of most
of the men on the War memorial. Unfortunately the details of about 5
of them are not shown on this list. The names have been sorted into
alphabetical order here for ease of research and reading.
