WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is located inside St Gile's parish church and is in the form white marble plaque with black lettering containing within a coloured marble frame. It contains the names of six men who fell in World War 1. Details of the memorial were published in the Buckinghamshire Herald 12th March 1921 presumably when the memorial was unveiled. No deaths were recorded in the village for World War 2.

CADD

Herbert George

Private 949, Royal Buckinghamshire Hussars. Killed in action in Egypt 11th December 1915. Born and enlisted Buckingham, resident Tottenham. Buried in ALEXANDRIA (CHATBY) MILITARY AND WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY, Egypt. Plot/Row/Section E. Grave 115.

The Cadds are still a prominent Buckingham family. A Herbert Edward Cadd, born 1893, was living with his Johnstone grandparents in Water Stratford in 1901.

HENRY

Kenneth Borrodaile

Rifleman S/3710, 13th Battalion, Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort's Own). Died of wounds 12th July 1916. Born 1895, Hendon (census) or Harrow (SDGW), enlisted LOndon, resident Pillerton Priors, Warwickshire. Buried in HEILLY STATION CEMETERY, MERICOURT-L'ABBE, Somme, France. Plot II.

Francis John

Lance Sergeant 430259, 10th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regiment). Died 15th August 1917. Born 1888, Water Stratford (2nd October 1896 at Weber Stratford, Bucks according to Canadian NA). Fruit rancher by trade. Married, wifre Mrs F May of Wynndoce?, British Columbia. Enlisted 3rd March 1915 at Victoria, British Columbia, aged 28 years 5 months; height 5 feet 7 inches, girth 36 inches, complexion fair, eyes grey, hair fair; religion Church of England. Pass fit 29th March 1915 at Willows Camp. No known grave. Commemorated on VIMY MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. National Archives of Canada Accession Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 6067 - 52

Thomas Walter

Private G/21055, 7th Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Died 17th July 1918. Born 1897, Water Stratford, enlisted Luton, Beds, resident Water Stratford. Buried in CHAUNY COMMUNAL CEMETERY BRITISH EXTENSION, Aisne, France. Plot 4. Row B. Grave 28.

HILSDON

William James

Private 165662, 101st Battalion, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Died of wounds 14th October 1918. Born 1898, Water Stratford, enlisted Buckingham, resident Water Stratford. Formerly 863, Royal Buckinghamshire Hussars. His family farmed at Water Startford throughout the 20th century. Buried in HOOGE CRATER CEMETERY, , Belgium. Plot XIV Row H Grave 16.

SIKES

Robert Gordon

Lieutenant, Leicestershire Yeomanry attached to 4th (Queen's Own) Hussars. Died 22nd February 1919. Aged 30. Born 1888, Leciestershire. The Sikes family lived in one of the 'big houses' in Water Stratford and the head of that family was born in Leicestershire, but Robert was living with his mother in Leicestershire in 1901, so was presumably a nephew of the Water Stratford family. Son of James Sikes, of 10a, Dawson St., Port Arthur, Ontario, Canada; husband of Clementina Gwendoline Sikes, of Water Stratford, Buckingham. Buried in ST. SEVER CEMETERY EXTENSION, ROUEN, Seine-Maritime, France. Section S. Plot V. Row M. Grave 12.
