He was working as a patternmaker in Wolverton in 1911 but at some time before the end of 1914 he had travelled to Canada. On 8 December 1914 in Toronto he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force, age 25 years 11 months, height 5 feet 8½ inches, chest 35 inches, fair complexion, blue eyes, fair hair, religious denomination Church of England. . He served on the Western Front and attained the rank of Sergeant. His battalion distinguished themselves at the Somme, Arras, Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele among other battles.
