WOUGHTON ON THE GREEN - WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial stands beside the road through the village on the outside of St Mary's Ecumenical Church churchyard wall. The memorial takes the form of a simple Celtic cross with a stepped base and lists four names for World War 1. There is also a lych gate nearby containing, on the inner wall, the names of the men who served in World War 1 (17 names).

Private 266253, 2nd/1st Buckinghamshire Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Killed in action during the Third Battle of Ypres Wednesday 22nd August 1917 in France & Flanders. Born 1885. Enlisted Aylesbury, resident Bletchley. Husband of Eleanor,; father of Thomas Herbert, Henry William and Rose Margaret Valentine. Buried in NEW IRISH FARM CEMETERY, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot XIX. Row B. Grave II.
KNOPP Alfred
probably Alfred Knopp, Driver T/28255, Royal Army Service Corps, Army Service Corps attached 23rd Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps. Died Sunday 20th October 1918 in France & Flanders. Aged 27. Born Hackney, enlisted London, resident Kensington, W. Son of Alfred and Fanny Knopp, of Walthamstow; husband of Harriett Knopp, of 59, Peel St., Kensington, London. Buried in MAZARGUES WAR CEMETERY, MARSEILLES, Bouches-du-Rhone, France. Plot IV. Row B. Grave 27.
MANSFIELD William Charles
Private 146722, 18th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Killed in action Thursday 22nd August 1918 in France & Flanders. Age 19. Born Cambridge, enlisted Maidstone, resident Sundridge. Son of W. C. and Mary Ann Esther Mansfield, of Holly Tree Farm, Woughton Green. Formerly 41685, London Regiment. Commemorated on VIS-EN-ARTOIS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 10.
PURCELL Ernest
Private 23806, 7th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Died of wounds Sunday 13th May 1917 in Salonika. Aged 36. Born and resident Woughton, enlisted Bletchley. Husband of Rose Purcell, of Woughton. Buried in SARIGOL MILITARY CEMETERY, KRISTON, Greece. Row B. Grave 277.
