Able Seaman J/16455, H.M.S. "Queen Mary", Royal Navy who was killed or died as a direct result of enemy action on Wednesday, 31st May 1916. Born 26 July 1896 at Leyton, Essex. Son of William Vail, of 19, Marshall Rd, Hills Road, Cambridge. In 1911 he was aged 14, Grocery man, born Leyton, Essex and resident 117 Belmont Park Road, West Ham; his father was born at Stretham, Cambs. No known grave. Commemorated on PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Hampshire. Column 13. See also Cambridge St John's
Driver 68229, 82nd Battery, Royal Field Artillery. Died on service in the Balkans 4 September 1916. Aged 22. Born Ely, Cambridgeshire 3 January 1894, enlisted Bedford. Son of Aaron and Mary Jane Vaughan, of 19, Staffordshire Street, Cambridge. Admitted to Ely, Market Street Infants' School 27 September 1897, resident Bull Lane, Ely. In the 1901 census he was aged 6, born Ely, Cambridgeshire, son of Aaron and Mary J Vaughan, resident Spring Head Lane, The City of Ely, Ely Trinity (Isle of Ely), Ely, Cambridgeshire. Buried in BAGHDAD (NORTH GATE) WAR CEMETERY, Iraq. Plot XXI. Row G. Grave 39. See also Cambridge, Christ Church
Corporal 238026, 1st/6th Battalion (Territorial), Royal Warwickshire Regiment formerly T/4/250659, Royal Army Service Corps and 64718, Cheshire Regiment. Killed in action 9 August 1918. Born and baptised Mooltan, India, resident Cambridge, enlisted Hull, Yorks. In the 1901 census he was aged 19, born India, a Boot Salesman, son of Tom and Sarah Vinsen, resident 182, Gwydir Street, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 26, born India, a Shop Assistant, boarding at 21, Middleton Street, Hull, Sculcoates, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (East Riding). Buried in BARENTHAL MILITARY CEMETERY, Italy. Plot 2. Row C. Grave 5.
