The Chippenham memorial is in to be found in the Churchyard of St Margaret's Church, Chippenham. It takes the form of a Latin Cross on an octangonal column mounted on a square plinth with a single step base. There are 21 names for World War 1 and 5 names for World War 2. There is a further memorial located on the village green, Badlingham Road, Chippenham commemorating a Bomber crew who crashed in the village.

Private 13835, 9th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Killed in action 16th September 1916. Age 24. Born Mildenhall, Suffolk, enlisted Newmarket. Son of the late Mr. Henry and Mrs. Eliza Bowden, of Chippenham, Cambridgeshire.Buried in LONDON CEMETERY AND EXTENSION, LONGUEVAL, Somme, France.

Husband of Florence Mary Claydon of Chippenham Park. Born in Steeple Bumpstead, enlisted Bury St. Edmunds. Buried in Savy British Cemetery F.672

Served under the surname Taylor. Private 12758, 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died of wounds 11th April 1915. Aged 20. Born Isleham, enlisted Newmarket. Son of Ellen Ellington (formerly Taylor), of 6, New Row, Chippenham, Ely. Buried in LA CLYTTE MILITARY CEMETERY, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.. Plot I. Row E. Grave 10.

John Robert TAYLOR was born in Isleham on 26th January 1894 (Newmarket Q1-1894 3B:535) Baptised as COLE on 3rd November 1895 in Chippenham. The son of John and Ellen COLE (nee TAYLOR). In the 1901 census he was aged 7, residing at New Street, Chippenham with his father, John COLE [34] a stockman, born Chippenham, his mother Ellen [27] born Isleham; his half brother Herbert [5] and half sisters Elsie M [3] and Sophia [1]. All the children, except John were born in Chippenham. In the 1911 census he was aged 17, a farm labourer, having reverted to his birth surname of TAYLOR, living in New Street, Chippenham with his stepfather Alfred ELLINGTON [44] farm labourer, born Isleham, his mother and half brother Herbert,and half sister Sophie and new siblings Arthur COLE [8], Mabel Cole [6] and Nellie COLE [3], all three born in Chippenham. His mother had been married to Alfred Ellington less than one year. The CWGC lists his mother as Ellen Ellington (formerly Taylor) of 6 New Row, Chippenham, Ely. John Cole senior seems to have died in 1909.

Rifleman 0/417, 9th Battalion, The Rifle Brigade. 12th Division. Killed in action during the German Spring Offensive on the 24th March 1918. Born in Walthamstow and enlisted in Stratford. Next of kin, Chippenham. Commemorated on The Pozieres Memorial MR.27

Private G/65738 of the 2nd Battalion Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in battle on 26th July 1917 at Elverdinghe, Leper, West Vlaanderen. Belgium (just outside Yypes). He is buried at at the Canadian Farm Cemetery at Elverdinghe in Plot/Grave number 1.G.8.

Private 12850, "A" Company, Depot, Suffolk Regiment. Discharged with TB in 1915 and awarded a silver war badge. Died 1917, buried 1 February 1917 in Chippenham. Born 4 March 1895 in Chippemham, baptised 9 June 1895 in Chippenham, son of Elias (a carpenter) and Jane Drake. IN the 1911 census he was aged 16, a farm labourer, born Chippenham, resident with his parents, Elias and Jane Drake, in the High Street, Chippenham, Cambridgeshire. Attested 31 August 1914 in Newmarket, a labourer by trade. Discharged 4 November 1915 at Bury St Edmunds, aged 20 years 7 months, height 5 feet 7 inches, chest 36 inches, dark complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, labourer by trade, intended place of resident High Street, Chippenham, Cambs. Discharged as no longer being physically fit for war service (Para. 392 (XVI)). Had served with the Expeditionary Force in France during 1915, embarked 19 January 1915, posted to Depot in UK 20 August 1915. He was wounded in action, suffered gunshot wounds to the scalp/head, 19 April 1915, Admitted various hospitals, finally discharged 15 May 1915. Admitted to hospital at Rouen suffering with Tubercle Lung 8 August 1915, treated for bronchitis, diagniosed as Pulmonary Tuberculosisand transferred to England 20 August 1915, trasnferred by Hospital Ship Newhaven to England 20 August 1915. Buried in CHIPPENHAM (ST. MARGARETS) CHURCHYARD, Cambridgeshire.

Private 1165, 1/5th Battalion, The Suffolk Regiment. 54th Division. Died of wounds on the Gallipoli Peninsular on the 12th September 1915. Grave lost. Territorial. Born in Chippenham and enlisted in Newmarket. Commemorated on The Helles Memorial,Turkey. MR.4.

Captain, ‘D’ Company, 6th Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment, d 20/9/1917, age 34, commemorated: TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Son of Thomas and Martha Langley, of Chippenham, Ely. Formerly 19th Royal Hussars. Field commissioned into the Wilts Regiment but with the 19th Hussars as a sergeant in 11th October 1909 where he won first and second prize (two different horses) at the Royal Military Tatoo in the horseriding competition..

Private G/25870 6th Battalion, The East Kent Regiment. 12th. Division. Died of wounds. 28th September 1918. Aged 19. Born and resident in Chippenham, enlisted in Cambridge. Son of Mr & Mrs Alfred Taylor of New Street, Chippenham. East Kent Regiment – The Buffs – were fighting alongside American soldiers at nearby Peronne when he was wounded. He subsequently died in a battlefield hospital. Buried in Doingt Communal Cemetery Extension F.194.

Killed in action flying out of Maison Blanche, Algeria, in a Bristol Beaufighter VIF, serial number V8649, when the aircraft was shot down by return fire when attacking a Ju88 and crashed into the sea off Sassari, Sardinia, 14 April 1943. Born 22 August 1922. Native of Chippenham, Cambridgeshire. Son of Lt.-Col. Gerard Prideaux Tharp, The Rifle Brigade, and Dora Maryan Tharp. In the 1939 Register he was born 22 August 1922, unmarried, a Student, resident "the Place" High Street, West Wratting, South Cambridgeshire R.D., Cambridgeshire. No known grave. The Short Stirling III Bomber BK784, based at RAF Tuddenham in 1944, crashed at Chippenham, about 5 miles away, after a night operation bombing of Essen. It was part of Bomber Command. No. 90 Squadron; the squadron converted to the Lancaster in May-June 1944, flying that type until the end of the war.
