War 1 and 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © 2000 Dave Edwards
This
memorial is a cross in the centre of the village at the junction of
London Road and Shepreth Road and takes the form of a cross mounted
on a plinth with a two-stepped base. There are 11 names for World War
1 and 2 for World War 2; in 2000 the name of George Payne was added
to the memorial. The memorial was dedicated on 10th December 1919 and
rededicated 20th September 2000. To erect it cost £120 from public
subscription; the masons were Messrs. G. Maile & Son Ltd. Details
appeared in the Cambridge Independent Press 12 December 1919.
There
is also a tablet inside St Mary's Church containing the First World
War names (except for the 2000). It takes the form of a plain, rectangular,
bronze plaque with the inscription in relief. It reads "TO THE
GLORY OF GOD AND TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE
GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918".
To
the Glory of God and in pious memory of
our Fowlmere men who fell in battle
during the Great War
1914 – 1918.
