being transported by Japanese to Japan, they were sunk by a torpedo
from an American Submarine, but picked up by the Japanese and imprisoned
in a P.O.W. camp at FUKUAKA in Japan. He was in that camp when the
atomic bomb was dropped. The camp was liberated by the Australians
on August 18th 1945. He was the husband of Mrs Gwen Claydon, of
26, School Lane, Fulbourn, and the son of Mr & Mrs W Claydon of
Mill Hill, Fulbourn. |

14346794, enlisted 1942, aged 29, was Bricklayer so held in reserved
occupation due to building aerodromes within Cambridgeshire. Originally
enlisted in the P.T.C (Physical Training Corps) and then went to
94th Field Artillery but was moved to 81st Anti-Tank Regiment where
most of his action was seen. Landed in Port Said in 1943 and then
onto the Italy Landings at Anzio. Saw action attacking the Gothic
Line and was employed on several frantic engagements against German
Armour...which resulted in heavy casualties. After defeat of Germany
and Italy, moved to M.E.F and saw action in Palestine until discharged
in late 1946'.
He was a real
lively character and also told used to play the spoons in the
'Regimental band' (a few blokes messing around with instruments)
and also cut his pals hair although never cutting hair in his
life. He passed away aged 91 in 2004.
