1939 – 1945

News has been received by Mrs. M. Daynes, of 6, Council Houses, Landbeach, stating that her husband, Gunner Eric W. C. Daynes, R.A., died in Borneo Camp on April 10th from dysentery, Gunner Daynes was the third son of Mr. and Mrs. Daynes, of 6, Council Houses, Landbeach. He was 34 years of age and was educated at Landbeach School. At the out break of war he was employed at Waterbeach. His wife is a cook in the W.A.A.F.

This man is not on the Cambridgeshire Boer War memorial but the following information has been supplied by the South African Heritage Resources Agency:

"According to our records, Captain S.E. Hall of the Imperial Yeomanry was killed in action on Christmas day, 25-12-1901 at Tweefontein. He was originally buried at Groenkop (also known as Tweefontein) but his remains, together with those of his comrades were moved to the Harrismith garden of remembrance.

Harrismith is a large town in the Free State province. Groenkop is an isolated area not far from Harrismith and the organisation then responsible for the maintenance of British war graves in South Africa decided that for maintenance purposes outlying, isolated graves should be disinterred to more central gardens of remembrance.

There is a memorial to the men who died at Tweefontein at Groenkop. Hall's name appears on this memorial. There is also, according to our records, a marble cross in the Harrismith garden of remembrance marking Hall's grave.

If you can find a copy of The Times History of the War In South Africa, edited by L.S. Amery, 1907, volume 5, pages 431 - 443 provide an account of the battle of Groenkop."
