Memorial located in St Peters Church, Papworth.
It is a large wooden plaque and contains the various details and unusually gives the place of death and burial but not date of death.

To the glory of God and to the men of this parish who gave their lives in the Great War 1914 - 1919.

BREED

Alfred George

[Name George Alfred everywhere else] Private 444310, 55th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. Died at Bramshott Camp Friday, 10th December 1915. Aged 23. Born 14th February 1893 at Papworth Everard. Son of William and Julia Breed, London St, Godmanchester. Labourer by trade. Unmarried. Enlisted 14th May 1915 aged 22 years and 3 months, accepted 20th May 1915. Height 5 feet 9 inches, girth 39 inches. Complexion medium, eyes hazel brown, hair dark brown, religion Church of England. Buried St Peters, Papworth Everard. From Andy Pay's research into the Marquis de Ruvigny' s Roll of Honour the following:

Volume 1, part 1, page 49, BREED, George Alfred, Private, number 444310, 55th battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force. Son of the late William Breed, Farm Labourer, by his wife Julia (Papworth Everard), daughter of James Paine of Croydon, co Cambridge.

Born Hatley St George county Cambridge 14-2-1892. Educated there and at Papworth Everard. Went to Canada 1-3-1912, volunteered for services overseas on the outbreak of war and died in the military hospital at Bramshott, Liphook, Hants of Influenza contracted while going through his course of training.

Andrew Herbert

2nd Lieutenant, 8th Rajputs. Killed in action 18th April 1915 at Shabkadar. Buried Shabkadr Cemetery, Peshawar. Commemorated on Delhi Memorial (India Gate). Delhi, India. Face 5

MARTIN

John

2nd Lieutenant, 229th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Killed in action at Giavera Wednesday, 19th December 1917. Aged 25. Only son of Edith Lucy and the late John Martin of "The Beacon" Abbots Kerswell, Nr Newton Abbot, S. Devon. Late of Papworth Everard. Buried in Giavera British Cemetery, Arcade, Italy. Plot 2. Row A. Grave 8.

PRESTON

Ernest John

Private 35255, 2nd Garrison Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Died Thursday, 3rd October 1918 in India. Aged 34. Born Kenton, Devon, enlisted Huntingdon, resident Papworth Everard. Son of Henry and Diana Preston, of Farringdon, Exeter; husband of Helena Preston, of 6, King St., Exmouth, Devon. Formerly 5209, Suffolk Regiment. Buried in Karachi Cemetery, India Grave A/E. B. 4. Commemorated on Delhi Memorial (India Gate). Face 1.

RISELEY

John Crossford

Private, 17821, 6th Bn., Bedfordshire Regiment who died on Sunday, 25th June 1916. Killed in France. Buried in BIENVILLERS MILITARY CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Grave IV. D. 9.

DING

W Rowland

Not on the Memorial probably because he was a civilian; but an interesting character. Qualified as a pilot before the War, and, during it, worked as a test pilot for the Blackburn Aircraft Co., at Brough, Yorks., testing newly-built aircraft. He was killed flying a BE.2c on 12/5/1917. Buried at Papworth St. Everard.

God proved them and found them worthy for himself.

Probably: Signalman 2588283, Reginald Alderman Bye, Royal Corps of Signals. Died 30th May 1944, age 30. Son of Thomas and Mary Bye, of Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire; husband of Eileen Mary Bye, of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Buried: DELHI WAR CEMETERY, India. Grave 2. H. 14. See also Great Shelford.

PEARL

Albert Henry James

Sapper 2162304, H.Q. 1 Port Construction and Repair Group, Royal Engineers. Died 25th December 1944, age 28. Son of Albert Joseph and Alice Pearl, of Papworth Everard, Cambridgeshire. Buried in SCHOONSELHOF CEMETERY, Antwerpen, Antwerpen, Belgium. Grave V. C. 61.

Corporal 5731413, Dorsetshire Regiment. Died 23rd March 1944. Son of James Edmund Christopher Bignell and of Edith Marie Bignell (nee Dupre), of Bel Royal Jersey, Channel Islands. His brother Gordon Edmund also died on service.

BLACKBURN Isaac William

Private 5769371, 50th Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment. Died 7th July 1940.

CAIREY Charles William

Sapper 1412804, 661 Construction Company, Royal Engineers, Died 12th November 1940, age 44. Son of Charles and Katherine Cairey; husband of Annie E. Cairey, of Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex. Also served in 1914-18 War.

CLARK William

Second Lieutenant 156382, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Died 8th February 1941.

KERR Stanley

Lance Corporal 2610896, 3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards. Died 4th September 1941, age 33. Son of Thomas and Anne Kerr.

PIGGOTT Alfred Anthony

Aircraftman 1st Class 744474, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 5th December 1940.

STANLEY Arthur Edward

Aircraftman 2nd Class 906462, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 20th December 1939, age 27. Son of George and Hetty Stanley, of Streatham, London.

THORNTON Clarice May

Private W/14376, Auxiliary Territorial Service. Died 16th January 1942, age 39. Daughter of Arthur E. Wood and Bessie Grace Wood, of Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire.

There is also one odd-ball memorial to Captain Edmund Williams of the Avalanche which sank in 1877.
