Ellum George

Pte, 24896, 2nd Suffolk Regiment. Killed in action 18th August 1916 aged 30 years. Born Stapleford where he was employed as a land worker, enlisted Great Shelford. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Died in an action in Cochrane Alley east of Maltz Horn Farm in the early morning of the 18th. One of his brother’s serving with the 11th Suffolks at Bazentin Le Petit found his body lying in the trench but was ordered back into the line and the body was lost and never recovered. Brother of Richard Elbourne (See below) and youngest son of Robert and Anne Elbourn 62, Barr Lane, Stapleford. His name together with that of his brother is inscribed in his parents gravestone in Stapleford extension cemetery.

Richard John

Pte, 27281, 7th Royal Fusiliers. Killed in action 13th November 1916 aged 40 years. Born and resident Stapleford where he was employed as a land worker, enlisted Great Shelford. Buried in Ancre British Cemetery, Somme, France. On 13th November 1916 Richards Battalion was a part of 190 Brigade attached to the 63rd (Royal Navy) Division. On the date of his death he was fighting on the right of the river Ancre just north of Hamel. Their task was to storm and capture Beaucourt Railway Station. At 6.30 a.m. 190 Brigade was told to advance but the 7th Fusiliers with the Bedford’s became held up in the enemy front line trenches. At some stage of this fighting Richard was killed. He is buried in the area where he was killed as the cemetery is located in what was no mans land in November 1916. Eldest son of Robert and Anne Elbourne, 62 Barr Lane, Stapleford. One of 3 sons who served in the Great war and the elder brother of Ellum Elbourne (see above). His name together with that of his brother is inscribed on his parents gravestone in Stapleford village extension cemetery.

Frederick Maxwell

2nd Lt, Royal Flying Corps/Royal Garrison Artillery. Died Friday 14th September 1917, age 18. Son of Frederick William & Theophila Anne Frances Hawes, of Lydgate House, Hunstanton, Norfolk. Educated at Lydgate House, Hunstanton, Norfolk, and Marlborough College, Wilts. Born at Ely. Buried in Stapleford (St Andrew) Churchyard in North-East corner. "Airmen Died..." gives his middle name as "Mansell". Killed in a flying accident while in training as pilot at 56 (Training) Sqn., London Colney, flying a Spad S.7.

Formerly 1163, Cambridgeshire Regiment. Listed in absent voters register for Cambridgeshire 1918. Awarded Military Medal. Buried in EPEHY WOOD FARM CEMETERY, EPEHY, Somme, France. Grave I. A. 14. [The war memorial states he died 1918 and this is reflected here. The Soldiers Died in the Great War CD says William d 23-9-16, as does CWGC. However, the fact he is buried at Epehy Wood Farm Cem tells us the date is wrong. It should be 1918. This would also be the reason why he is in the Absent Voters register for 1918 and why the memorial states this date.]
