Cheadle Hulme School was originally known as The Manchester Warehousemen and Clerks’ Orphan Schools. It was founded by a group of Manchester businessmen whose main concern was to provide a caring environment and education for 'orphans and necessitous children'. From its inception, the School was to be 'founded and conducted on the most liberal principles and be open for the reception of both sexes'. It was, and still is, non-denominational.

The School was first established at Shaw Hall in Flixton and moved six years later to Park Place, Ardwick, in the centre of Manchester. However, it had already been decided that a new school should be built and the foundation stone of the main building was laid in 1867. The School moved to its present site two years later.

In November 1914 the Executive Committe made a premilinary offer to the Red Cross Society of the Infectious Hospital, at the school, for use as a hospital for wounded soldiers. By March 1915 agreement was reached and the hospital was refurnished by the red Cross; arrangements were made for the use of twenty-four beds. In September 1916 the Girls "A" Dormitory was taken over thus making 65 beds available. Later in the year and in 1917 two asbestos buildings were erected on the girl's playground and finally a marquee; in all it was possible to accomodate 100 casualties. In January 1919 application was made for the release of the hospital and building was freed in March. The number of cases dealt with amounted to 1,402.

Between 350 and 400 Old Boys served in H.M. Forces during World War 1; 59 Old Boys and one Old Girl lost their lives. A Sundial was erected to their memory in the main drive and was unveiled by Mr. J. C. Buckley the Chairman of the Old Scholers Association on 18th September 1920; the Roll of Honour was erected in the holden Hall in June 1921 and was unveiled by Mr. G. F. Burditt, C.B.E., J.P., Chairman of the Executive Committe. In the Second World War 51 Old Girls and 480 Old Boys served in the Forces; 46 lost their lives. The Roll of Honour was placed with that of the First World War. In the Autumn of 1953 the plaque in Holden Hall, which had been extended to contain the names of those who fell in the Second World War, was unveiled by Mr. Niel Pearson, Chairman of the Executive Committee and President of the Old Waconians' Association.

Shortly after the end of the war a memorial fund was inaugrated to provide funds to build a Memorial Sports Pavilion in which the Roll of Honour could be permanently housed.
