CHESTER CATHEDRAL SOUTH AFRICA (BOER) WAR MEMORIAL

Compiled and copyright © Martin Edwards 2006

There are two memorials within Chester Cathedral that cover the Cheshire Regiment men who died in the South African (Boer) war. Both are in the South Transept of the Cathedral. The first is an ornate marble tablet showing surnames, initials and battalion or company within the Cheshire Regiment they were serving with when they died, there 119 names; the memorial was unveiled 30th July 1904 by Field Marshall Sir William R Robertson, the sculptor was Thomas Rudge. The second is a section of memorial wall in the Cheshire Regiment Chapel naming those from the Cheshire Regiment who fell and contain forenames or initials and surname with rank. The names on the two memorials do not necessarily correspond. Some have exra initials on the 2nd Battalion memorial others appear on one but not the other. Those marked * appear only on the 2nd Battalion memorial, those marked + appear only on the Cheshire Regiment memorial. The names have been merged into one list here and sorted into alphabetical order for ease of research and reading.

Extract from The Last Post by Mildred G Dooner:

Collins.—Capt. Charles Welman Collins, 2nd Batt Cheshire Regt., died at Elandsfontein Nov. 14th, 1901, of wounds received in the attack on Col. Benson’s column at Brakenlaagte, twenty miles north.west of Bethel, on Oct. 30th. He was the son of Major Joseph Collins, formerly of the same Regiment, and now of 6, Waterloo Road, Chester. Capt. Collins was born in Oct., 1872, and educated at Rossall, where he was a school monitor and in the Hockey XI. He was a good cricketer and football player. After leaving Rossall he entered Cambridge University, where he rowed No. 3 in his college boat. In June, 1894, he entered the Cheshire Regt. from the University, and was promoted lieut. Jan., 1897, and capt. Dec., 1900. He was signalling officer to the 10th Brigade in South Africa from Feb. to Dec., 1900, and took part in the advance through O.R.C. to Johannesburg. He then served with Col. Benson’s column, from its formation to the time of his death, as signalling officer. He was unmarried. Capt. Collins was mentioned in despatches by F.-M. Earl Roberts, L. G., Sept. 10th, 1901, for having rendered “special and meritorious service;” and by Gen. Lord Kitchener, Dec. 8th, 1901, for his “distinguished good service.”
