ALVA WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 and 2 - Detailed information

The memorial is to be found in Johnstone and Cochrane Park, Beauclerc Street, Alva. It takles the form of a Celtic cross on an oblong shaft mounted on a plinth with a two stepped base. There is a depiction of a winged cherubs head on the front face with a Sword of Sacrifice positioned on the shaft of the cross; the whole is enclosed within a square stone surround with four steps leading up to memorial. The memorial architects were Mr William Kerr of Messrs John Melvin and Son, the sculptor of the bronze plaques was Mr Charles Henishaw, Edinburgh, and the stone carvers were rs Holmes and Jackson, Glasgow. The memorial was unnveiled by Miss Johnstone of Alva and dedicated by Rev J A Williamson, BD, VD 21 October 1923. The unveiling of the additional World War 2 details was by Mr William Widdle in June 1951. There are 138 names listed for World War 1 and 37 for World War 2. Flying out of RAF Oulton, Norfolk, in a Consolidated Liberator VI, serial number TS520, on night operations, he was shot down and killed in action by a Ju88 night fighter over Dornheim during a Window sortie in support of a raid on Dortmund 21 February 1945. LACKIE George
[Listed as Aircraftman 1st Class on memorial] Sergeant (Air Gunner) 1820269, 207 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Flying out of Spilsby, Lincolnshire ina Lancaster I, serial number DV360, he was killed in action when his aircraft crashed between Kleinhau and Grosshau about 6 miles southwest of Duren during a raid on Wesseling 22 June 1944. LOOKER James
Corporal (Ground staff) 981732, 1692 Flight, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. A Miles Martinet I, serial number NR418, having taken off from R.A.F. Great Massingham on a day flight on Meteorological reconnaissance, the aicraft ran into a snow storm and urned back, lost height and collided with Mosquito MM644, delivering a glancing blow, before crashing into a radar hut in which he was an occupant 22 January 1945. Aged 28. Son of John and Katherine Looker, of Alva; husband of Margaret Gentleman Looker, of Tillicoultry. Buried in ALVA CEMETERY, Clackmannanshire. Section 2. West Part. Grave 327.
MACKIE John William
[Listed as O.L. Flight Sergeant on memorial] Sergeant (Wireless Operator/Air Gunner) 994362, 149 (East India) Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Took off from R.A.F. Lakenheath, Suffolk, flying in a Short Stirling I, serial number BF372, on a night raid to Turin, his aircraft was hit by flak over the target, badly wounding both pilots; despite tremendous difficulties en route, the crew were able to regain the south coast where the crew were ordered to bale out but he wa unable to comlpy ande perished when the aircraft crashed into the sea off Dymchurch, Kent, 29 November 1942. Aged 30. Native of Alva, Clackmannanshire. Son of Alexander and Marion Mackie, of Alva. Buried in ALVA CEMETERY, Clackmannanshire. Section 2. West Part. Grave 59.
