BROUGHTON MOOR WAR MEMORIAL

The Broughton Moor memorial is located in St Columba's churchyard, Broughton Moor. It takes the form of a cross with a wreath on the face mounted on a plinth on a single-stepped base with a surround. It lists sixteen names for World War 1 and ten for World War 2. It was built by Messrs. Walker Brothers.

Private 82408. 62nd Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), formerly 32026 Border Regiment. Killed in action 26th October 1917, aged 19 years. Son of George and Mary Armstrong of The Schoolhouse, Broughton Moor, Cumberland. Born Broughton and enlisted Penrith, Cumberland. Buried in Aeroplane Cemetery. Plot VI. Row B. Grave 8.
ARMSTRONG Joseph
Possibly Sergeant 201610. 5th Battalion, Border Regiment. Killed in action 22nd March 1918, aged 30 years. Son of George and Mary Armstrong. Husband of Hannah Mary Armstrong of Fitzsimons Yard, Ellenborough, Maryport, Cumberland. Born Workington, Cumberland, enlisted Kendal, Westmorland and resident Ellenborough, Cumberland. No known grave. Commemorated on Pozieres Memorial. Panel 46.
BELL James
Able Seaman Tyneside Z/1551, 'D' Company, 4th Platoon, Collingwood Battalion, Royal Naval Division, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Assumed killed in action 4 June 1915. Aged 21. Son of Robert and Mary Bell, of 6, Granville Avenue, Annfield Plain, Co. Durham. In the 1901 census there was a James Bell, stepbrother to Henry Towers (below), aged 6, born Broughton Moor, son of Robert and Mary Bell, resident Broughton Moor Standingstone, Broughton Moor, Cockermouth, Cumberland. He was born 22 May 1894 in Broughton Moor, Cumberland. His family were coal miners and with employment reducing there they moved to the Stanley. Height 5 feet 8¼ inches, chest 36 inches, complexion medium, light brown hair, eyes blue, religious denomination Methodist; miner by trade. He could not swim. Entered the service 14 November 1914. Entitled to 1914-15 Star, Victory & British War Medals. No known grave. Commemorated on Helles Memorial, Turkey (including Gallipoli). Panel 8 to 15.

Private 1434. 5th Battalion, Border Regiment. Died of wounds 8th August 1915, aged 26 years. Son of James and Mary Jane Irving of Broughton Moor, Cumberland. Husband of Florence Ann Bowness (formerly Irving) of 21 Nelson Square, Castlecroft, Egremont, Cumberland. Born and enlisted Cockermouth, Cumberland. Buried in La Chapelle D’Armenieres Communal Cemetery. Plot/Row/Section H. Grave 5.
IRVING William
Possibly Private 1677. 5th Battalion, Border Regiment. Killed in action 1st October 1916. Born Christ Church, Cockermouth, enlisted Workington and resident Maryport, Cumberland. No known grave. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face 6A and 7C.
METCALF Joseph
Gunner 38857. 12th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Motors). Killed in action 12th June 1917. Born Broughton Moor and enlisted Maryport, Cumberland. Buried in Railway Dugouts Burial Ground. Plot VII.Row Q. Grave 2.

Private 16977. 8th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 7002 Northumberland Fusiliers. Killed in action13th April 1917. Born Maryport, Cumberland and enlisted Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland. Buried in Tilloy British Cemetery, Tilloy-Les-Moflaines. Plot I. Row A. Grave 25.
O’ROOKE Joseph
Private 20661. 7th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. Killed in action 27th May 1918. Born Carlisle, Cumberland, enlisted Gateshead, Co Durham and resident Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland. No known grave. Commemorated on Soissons Memorial.
PRICE Thomas
Private 240854. 2nd Battalion, Border Regiment. Killed in action 26th October 1917. Born Broughton Moor, enlisted Whitehaven and resident Great Broughton, Cumberland. Buried in Hooge Crater Cemetery. Plot VII. Row D. Grave 1.
RENNEY Robert Kirkbride
Private 260621. D Company, 7th Battalion, Border Regiment, formerly 315339 Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry. Killed in action 28th October 1917, aged 22 years. Son of Mr and Mrs Renney of Outfields, Dearham, Cumberland. Born Broughton, enlisted Penrith and resident Dearham, Cumberland. No known grave. Commemorated on Tyne Cot Memorial. Panel 85 to 86.
SMITH John W
Possibly John William Smith. Private 16427, 4th Battalion, Coldstream Guards. Died home 3rd November 1918, aged 27 years. Son of Mrs Elizabeth Smith of 2 Arkleby Road, Aspartia, Cumberland. Born Plumbland and enlisted Aspartia, Cumberland. Buried in Plumbland (St Cuthbert) Churchyard.
STEWART John
Private 49228,11th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment, formerly 50379 3rd Battalion, Border Regiment. Killed in action 28th September 1918. Born Broughton Moor, enlisted Carlisle and resident Broughton Moor, Cumberland. Buried in Strand Military Cemetery. Plot VIII. Row H. Grave 8.
TODD James
Private 38818, 1st Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Died of wounds 4th November 1918. Born Broughton Moor, enlisted Maryport and resident Workington, Cumberland. Buried in Mazinghien Communal Cemetery.
TOWERS Henry
Private 19748, 2nd Battalion, Border Regiment. Killed in action 1st July 1916. Born Workington, Cumberland and enlisted Stanley, Co Durham. The family moved from Wyndham Row to the Stanley, Durham area between 1901 and 1911 although he then married a girl from Wyndham Row in 1912 who also moved to Stanley. She returned to Cumberland after his death. In the 1901 census he is the stepson Robert Bell, son of Mary Bell, aged 19, a Coalmine Hewer, born Workington, Cumberland, resident Broughton Moor Standingstone, Broughton Moor, Cockermouth, Cumberland. Half brother to James Bell (above). No known grave. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face 6A and 7C.

Private 39263. 57th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), formerly 11724 Border Regiment. Died of wounds 26th March 1918. Born Dearham, enlisted Maryport and resident Dearham, Cumberland. Awarded the Military Medal (M.M.). No known grave. Commemorated on Ploegsteert Memorial. Panel 11.
