CLAWTON WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 - Detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Martin Edwards 2007

Clawton is a village and parish on the small river Claw, 4 miles South-East of Holsworthy. The memorial stands by the road side in a recessed area at the junction of Launceston to Holsworthy Road and Clawton Church to Ashwater Road. It takes the form of a Celtic wheeled cross on a shaft, with ornate decoration in relief on the shaft and cross, mounted on a plinth with a two-steeped base. The inscription is on the front face of the plinth and the top step. The memorial contains six names of men who gave their lives and then below there are 34 names of those who served. There are no names for World War 2. The memorial was unveiled in 1924 and cost £65, the masons being John Freeman Sons and Co Ltd.
