The memorial is located in Royal Gardens, Dartmouth, South Hams, Devon. It takes the form of a rough hewn graite cross that is mounted on a square plinth that bears the names and the inscription; the wole stands on a two-stepped base. Listed are 160 men who died in World War 11, 82 who died in World War 2, 35 civilians who died in World War 2, one name from the Yangtse Incident (1949), one from the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960), and one name from Afghanistan (2001-2014). The memorial was originally unveiled by the Prince of Wales in 1921.

ALEXANDER Jack
No positive identification. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque.
ALGAR Harry [William]
Fitter Staff Serjeant 509, 1/2nd Devon Battery, Royal Field Artillery. He died on the 10th September 1915, and is buried at Dinapore No. 3 Cemetery, India. He is also commemorated on the Madras 1914-18 War Memorial, Chennal, India. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born and enlisted at Dartmouth. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque.
ASH Edward George
Chief Stoker 294823, HMS Marlborough, Royal Navy. He died on the 5th February 1920, and is buried at Haidar Pasha Cemetery, Turkey. He was born at Brixham, Devon in 1881.
ASH Frederick Arthur
Leading Stoker K/2587, HMS Indefatigable, Royal Navy. He died on the 31st May 1916 aged 25 at the Battle of Jutland, and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. Son of Mr G. Ash of Lake Street, Dartmouth; husband of R. Jones (formerly Ash) of Anzac Street, Dartmouth. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque.
BALL Samuel Henry
Stoker 1st Class K/18809, HM Submarine E/4, Royal Navy. He died on the 28th January 1918, and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. He was born at Dartmouth in 1894. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque.
BATES Lewis George
Second Lieutenant, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, attached to the 6th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. He died of his wounds on the 24th May 1916 aged 21, and is buried at Baghdad’s North Gate Cemetery. Son of Mr G. E. and Mrs A. E. Bates of L'Esperance, Dartmouth. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque.
BATES William John Farrow
Private 26524, 2nd Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 31st July 1917, and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium. Note that the memorial incorrectly records his third initial as ‘P’. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born and lived at Dartmouth; and enlisted at Newton Abbot, Devon.
BEADON John E.
First Mate, SS Lorca (London), Mercantile Marine. He died on the 15th November 1916 aged 35, and is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London. Husband of Maud Beadon of 1 Pebble Terrace, Victoria Road, Dartmouth. Born at Dartmouth. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque.
BELL Frederick
There is no one of this exact name listed in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission register or Soldiers Died in the Great War. However, the National Archives records a Seaman 238972 Frederick Gilbert Bell, Royal Navy; born at Kingswear in 1890. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque.

BELL William J.

Private SP/3130 William John Bell, 24th (2nd Sportsman’s) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action on the 13th November 1916, and is commemorated on a special memorial in Redan Ridge Cemetery No. 3, Beaumont-Hamel, France. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born at Kingswear, Devon; lived at Dartmouth; and enlisted at Exeter.

However: Frederick Bell could possibly be Private 1171 Fred Bell, 1/7th Cyclist Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He died on the 5th April 1915 aged 16, and is buried at St Winifred’s Churchyard, Branscombe, Devon. Son of Mrs King (formerly Bell) of 30 Greatlands Crescent, Swilly, Plymouth. Born at Dartmouth. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he enlisted at Dartmouth.

BLAKE William Robert
Able Seaman J/3711, HMS Musketeer, Royal Navy. He died on the 6th January 1916 age 24, and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. Note that the memorial incorrectly records his middle initial as ‘F’. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Blake of ‘Under Cliff’, Dartmouth. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque as W. Blake.
BLANK William John [Henry]
Engine Room Artificer 1st Class 268654, HMS Monmouth, Royal Navy. He died on the 1st November 1914 aged 38, and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. Son of Mr W. and Mrs M. Blank of Dartmouth; husband of Annie Elizabeth Blank of 87 Admiralty Street, Keyham, Devonport.
BOWHAY Arthur Sanders
Serjeant 207241, ‘C’ Company. 10th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment. He previously served as Sergeant 2004, Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 30th May 1918 aged 22, and is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial, France. Son of Albert Bowhay of Rock Cottage, Crowthers Hill, Dartmouth and the late M. (Eliza) Bowhay; husband of Norah Annie Bowhay of 3 Seaview, Above Town, Dartmouth. Brother of Harry (below). Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born and lived at Dartmouth; and enlisted at Exeter. It also records his date of death as 18th June 1918. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque; and a private plaque (opposite) within the church.
BOWHAY George Henry Aka Harry
Private 30599, 8th (Service) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 28th March 1917, and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born and enlisted at Dartmouth. Brother of Arthur (above). He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque, as G.H. Bowhay.

Lance Corporal 265680, ‘D’ Company, 1/6th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 13th July 1916 aged 20, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Son of Jane Brown, of 8 Woolcott Street, Redland, Bristol, and the late Alfred Samuel Brown. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born at Dartmouth; and enlisted at Bristol.
BUCKPITT George K
Private 5650, 1/4th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 3rd February 1917, and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he lived at Torquay; and enlisted at Newton Abbot, Devon. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque.
BURNELL Edwin [John]
Lance Corporal 14619, 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 4th October 1917, and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born at Hardylass (sic), Ireland; lived at Dartmouth; and enlisted at Exeter. The 1901 census shows that he was born in Ardglass, Co. Down, Ireland. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque. There are three brothers listed on the memorial, Edwin, George and William Burnell, are all brothers. The 1901 census shows them living with their father William a Chief Boatman for the Coast Guard, mother Mary, and sisters Gertrude, Edith and Mary, at Salcombe Regis, Devon.

Private 10865, 8th (Service) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 10th February 1916 aged 27, and is buried at Dartmoor Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt, France. Son of William and Mary Burnell of The Post Office, Dartmouth. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born at Hard Glass, Devon (sic); lived at Dartmouth; and enlisted at Exeter. The 1901 census shows that he was born at Sohule, Co. Cork, Ireland; and his occupation was a Telegraph Messenger. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque. There are three brothers listed on the memorial, Edwin, George and William Burnell, are all brothers. . The 1901 census shows them living with their father William a Chief Boatman for the Coast Guard, mother Mary, and sisters Gertrude, Edith and Mary, at Salcombe Regis, Devon.

Lance Corporal S/26215, 10th Battalion, Rifle Brigade. He was killed in action on the 14th August 1917 aged 35, and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres. Son of William and Mary Burnell, of 3 Alexander Cottages, Above Town, Dartmouth; husband of Nellie M. A. Burnell of Church Cottage, Cove, Farnborough, Hants. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born at Scull (sic), Cork, Ireland; and lived and enlisted at Leyton, Essex. The 1901 census shows that he was born at Schule, Co. Cork, Ireland, and his occupation was as a Bus Conductor. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque. There are three brothers listed on the memorial, Edwin, George and William Burnell, are all brothers. The 1901 census shows them living with their father William a Chief Boatman for the Coast Guard, mother Mary, and sisters Gertrude, Edith and Mary, at Salcombe Regis, Devon.

Private 20558, 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He died of wounds on the 5th January 1917 aged 33, and is buried at Bethune Town Cemetery, France. Husband of Alice Maud Callard of Bayards Cove, Dartmouth. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born and lived at Dartmouth; and enlisted at Exeter. Note both the Commonwealth War Graves Commission register and Soldiers Died record his first name as Sidney. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque.
CARDER Frederick

Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born at Dartmouth; lived at Paignton; enlisted at Torquay; and lists his first name as ‘James’.

Private 28761, 8th (Service) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 16th June 1917 aged 20, and is buried at Ecoust Military Cemetery, Ecoust-St-Mein, France. Son of William and Emma Jane Coles of 14 St. George's Square, Dartmouth. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born and lived at Dartmouth; and enlisted at Exeter. CURNOW Clifford
Engineer Motor Launch 10406, British Red Cross Society. He died on the 21st April 1918 aged 32, and is buried in Calcutta (Lower Circular Road) Cemetery and commemorated on the Madras 1914-18 War Memorial, Chennai, India. Son of the late Michael and Marina Curnow of Dartmouth. He had previously received a Mention in Despatches.
DIXON-WRIGHT Henry Dixon
Chaplain, HMS Barham, Royal Navy. He died on the 1st June 1916 aged 46, and is buried at Lyness Royal Naval Cemetery, Scotland. Son of Henry Wright of Wallington, Surrey; husband of A. Louisa Dixon-Wright of 24 Stanley Street, Southsea, Portsmouth. He was awarded the Member of the Royal Victorian Order. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque.

DYER [William] Robert
Serjeant 205167, 1st Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry. Originally served as Private 1417, Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 1st November 1818 aged 27, and is buried at Preseau Communal Cemetery Extension, France. Son of Mr and Mrs Dyer, of Dart View, Sandquay, Dartmouth. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born and enlisted at Dartmouth. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque as W. R. Dyer.
EVANS Henry
There is no one of this name listed in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission register or Soldiers Died in the Great War. However, the National Archives records a Seaman M18759 James Henry Evans, Royal Navy; born at Dartmouth in 1896.

Private 10876, 8th (Service) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of Loos, the 25th September 1915, aged 18, and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France. Son of Mrs E. A. Evans of Warfleet Cottage, Dartmouth. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born and lived at Dartmouth; and enlisted at Exeter.
EVANS William [John]
Private 22168, 6th (Service) Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 25th April 1917 aged 24, and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France. Son of Stephen Martin Evans and Sarah Maria Evans of 4 St. Saviour's Place, Dartmouth. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born and lived at Dartmouth, and enlisted at Exeter. FERRIS Roy [Warwick Elliott]
Private 30434, 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 27th September 1918 aged 28, and is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France. Son of Mrs Clara Ferris of Lima House, South Ford Road, Dartmouth. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born at Dittisham, Devon; and enlisted at Dartmouth. FFOLLIOTT Charles Russell Hastings
Lieutenant, 18 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps. He originally served at Private 318, Rhodesia Regiment, before transferring to the Royal Flying Corps. He died on the 10th March 1918, and is buried at Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, France. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque as C. R. Ffolliott.
FLEET Thomas
Ordinary Seaman J/68942, HMS Vivid, Royal Navy. He died on the 13th May 1917, and is buried at St Clement Churchyard, Townstall, Dartmouth. He was born at Kingswear, Devon in 1879. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque.
FOSTER Stephen George
Sapper 150288, Inland Water Transport, Royal Engineers. He died on the 20th August 1917 aged 20, and is buried at Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born and enlisted at Dartmouth. Son of George Hannaford Foster and Florence Foster of 25 Clarence Street, Dartmouth.
FOXWORTHY Louis Henry
Corporal 290034, 9th (Service) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 8th October 1918 aged 31, and is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France. FOXWORTHY William G
There is no one of this name listed in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission register or Soldiers Died in the Great War. However, there is a William G. Foxworthy with a recorded date of death in the December 1918 quarter, Totnes district, aged 38; and a Gunner SR/4284 (later 279284) William G. Foxworthy, Royal Garrison Artillery, listed in the National Archives. It is probable that this is the same person, and he was discharged from the army prior to his death. Brother of Louis (above). He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque.
