The
memorial is in the grounds of St Andrew's Church, at the corner of Station
Road and St Andrew's Road, Exwick, Exeter, Devon. It takes the form
of a plain cross mounted on aplintrh with a three-stepped base. There
are 14 names listed for World War 1 and 4 for World War 2. A further
Roll of Honour can be found within the church and this contains 15 names,
one more than the memorial. The memorial was originally unveiled on
26 June 1920 by Captain S.R.E. Snow and was dedicated Archdeacon of
Exeter and the Vicar, the Rev. H C Brenton.

Road, Newquay, co. Cornwall, by his wife, Caroline, dau. of Charles
Harris, of Hove ; b. Reigate, co. Surrey, 2 March, 1898
; educ. Earlswood, co. Surrey, and at Penryn, co. Cornwall ; joined
the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve 11 June, 1916 ; trained at the
Crystal Palace, where he quickly got his seamanship badge ; was
appointed to S.S. Renfrew 19 Dec. 1916, and was lost at sea, seven
miles off Milford Raven, 24 Feb. 1918, when that ship was torpedoed
by enemy submarine. Gunner Jeal was a keen pigeon-fancier and an
enthusiastic Boy Scout ; unm. |
