TETCOTT WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed information

Tecott is a village and parish, near the confluence of the rivers Tamar and Claw, five miles South of Holsworthy. The memorial is situated in a garden area beside the road leading to the Holy Cross Parish Church. It takes the form of a Celctic wheel cross with thick, tapering shaft and a two-stepped plinth. The World War 1 inscriptions are to be found on the front face of the two plinths, there are 7 men listed with Christian and surnames. One man is listed for World War 2 and the inscription is to be found at the base of the shaft on the front face. The memroial is the responsibility of the Tecott Esate. Sir Hugh Molesworth St Aubyn paid £61 10s 0d for the original memorial to be erected, the mason being Mr Doney.

Captain, H.M.S. "President", Royal Navy. Died 15th November 1917. Aged 50. Son of Admiral Henry Christian, M.V.O. Buried North of the church in ST. MARY CHURCHYARD, GREAT WITCOMBE, Gloucestershire.

HARRIS

George

possibly George HARRIS, Private 14377, 8th Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. Died of wounds in the Balkans 9th September 1916. aGED 26. Born and resident South Petherwin, Cornwall, enlisted Launceston, Cornwall. Son of Thomas and Eliza Harris, of The Village, South Petherwin; husband of Lilian Ann Harris, of Trecrogo Farm, South Petherwin, Launceston, Cornwall. Buried in SARIGOL MILITARY CEMETERY, KRISTON, Greece. Plot/Row/Section A. Grave 75.

Private 15668, 10th (Service) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. Killed in acion in Salonika 24th April 1917. Aged 21. Born Lezant, Cornwall, enlisted Holsworthy, Devon. Son of Andrew and Jane Morrish, of East Peeke, Tetcott, Holsworth, Devon. No known grave. Commemorated on DOIRAN MEMORIAL, Greece.

[Not on SDGW] Gunner 3191, 227th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Died 2nd August 1916. Aged 21. Son of Andrew and Jane Morrish, of Rushy Bank, Tetcott, Holsworthy, Devon. Buried in Trimulgherry Cantonment Cemetery and commmeorated on MADRAS 1914-1918 WAR MEMORIAL, CHENNAI, India. face 4.

Private 2091, 1st (City of London) Battalion (Royal Fusiliers), London Regiment. Killed in action in France & Flanders 10th May 1915. Aged 20. Born Holsworthy, enlisted Handel Street, London, resident City of London. Son of Francis and Mary Pooley, of Tetcott, Holsworthy, Devon. No known grave. Commemorated on PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL, Comines-Warneton, Hainaut, Belgium. Panel 10.

SILLIFANT

[Richard] Stanley

Private 53196, 1st/5th Battalion (Territorial), Lancashire Fusiliers. Died of wounds 23rd October 1918 in France & Flanders. Aged 19. Born Tetcott (Telcott on SDGW), enlisted Launceston. Son of Richard and Hannah Sillifant, of 30, Tower St., Launceston, Cornwall. Native of Tetcott, Holsworthy, Devon. Buried in AWOINGT BRITISH CEMETERY, Nord, France. Plot I. Row C. Grave 1.
