MONTEITH,
JOHN CASSELS, Lieut-Col., 2nd Battn. (16th Foot) The Bedfordshire
Regt., eldest s. of the late Rev. John Monteith, of Glencairn Parish,
by his wife, Ellen Maria, dau. of William Tanner Neve; and brother
to Lieut. W. N. Monteith (q.v.); b. Glencairn, co. Dumfries, 4 April,
1875: educ. Cargillfield; Fettes, and Glasgow University, where
he graduated M.A. in 1897, and had entered on his course for the
LL.B. when the South African War broke out, and he obtained a University
Commission as 2nd Lieut. Bedfordshire Regt. 28 May, 1900; was pro.
moted Lieut. 22 Jan. 1902, Capt. 5 Jan. 1910, Major and Lieut.-Col.;
joined the 1st Battn. In India 1900; served there seven years, during
which time he held several Staff appointments, being Adjutant to
the Regiment frcm 18 April, 1906, to 17 April, 1909. On 23 Jan.
1912, he was appointed Adjutant to the Glasgow University O.T.C.,
but on the declaration of war in Aug. 1914, he rejoined his old
Regiment: went to France 13 Aug. 1914, as part of the 5th Division,
when the Commanding Officer put him in charge of a company: took
part in the retreat from Mona, the Battles of Le Cateau and Cambray,
and subsequent engagements, being wounded near Ypres in Nov. and
invalided home. When he recovered from his wounds he was sent to
conduct the School of instruction for Officers at Cambridge, but
rejoined his Regiment at the front 4 Aug. 1915, being then Second
in Command of the 2nd Battn., and was killed in action near Hulluch.
during the Battle of Loos, 30 Sept. following, commanding his battalion.
Buried in the British Cemetery at Vermelles A former Colonel of
the Bedfords wrote: “Personally I feel Jock’s loss very
much; he was a gallant, loyal soldier, and helped me very much in
the task of taking over the command of an entirely new battalion.
- . - I had always set down Jock as the Commanding Officer of one
battalion of the Regiment, and I fear he will be very hard to replace.
He will never be forgotten by the present generation of the Regiment,
as all ranks fully realized his sterling work.” Lieut.-Col.
Monteith was mentioned in Despatches by F. M. Sir John (now Lord)
French ondon Gazette, 1 Jan. 1916], for Gallant and distinguished
service in the field. While at Glasgow he was a member of the Dialectic,
the S.R.C., the Students’ Union, the University Conservative
Club, the Athletic Club, and the Dramatic Club, being president
of several, notably the Students’ Union and the Conservative
Club. He m. at Coatdyke Parish Church, near Airdrie, 23 April, 1914,
Jane Robertson (Glenluiart, Moniaive, co. Dumfries), elder dau.
of Sir John Wilson, of Airdrie, Bart., and had a son, John Cassels,
b. 28 Sept. 1915. His surv. brother, Capt. Hugh Glencairn Monteith,
D.S.O., is now (1918) on active service with the R.A.M.C.

MONTEITH,
WILLIAM NEVE, Lieut., 2nd Battn. The Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort’s
Own), 2nd s. of the late Rev. John Monteith, of Glencairn Parish,
by his wife Ellen Maria, dau. of William Tanner Neve; and brother
of Lieut.-Col. J. C. Monteith (q.v.); b. at Glencairn, co. Dumfries,
1878; educ. Cargillfield, Fettes, Magdalen College, Oxford (B.A.),
and Glasgow University (B.D.); was a Presbyterian Minister, being
for some time Assistant to the Rev. Dr. Playfair, of St. Andrews,
and in 1907 became Minister of Elie Parish Church. On the outbreak
of war in Aug. 1914, he volunteered, and being granted leave of
absence by the Presbytery of St Andrews, joined the Fife and Forfar
Yeomanry as a Trooper, but obtained a Lieutenancy in the Rifle Brigade
22 Jan. 1915: went to France 29 May, 1915, and was killed in action
near Loos 25 Sept. following, while leadlng his men in an attack.
He was mentioned in Despatches by F.M. Sir Douglas Haig ondon Gazette,
15 June, 1916], for gallant and distinguished service in the field.
He m. at Largo Parish Church, 30 March, 1915, Muriel May, dau. of
Benjamin Connell Cox, of Gilston, Co. Fife, and had a son, William
Neve, b. 30 Dec. 1915. His brother, Capt. Hugh Monteith, D.S.O.,
is now on active service with the R.A.M.C.
