The
memorial is located in John and Josephene Bowes Museum Park, to the
right of the park entrance. It takes the form of an obelisk surmounting
a plinth with five steps. The First World War names are inscribed on
the plinth; the Second World War names can be found on a separate granite
slab placed on the steps

Helga Kitching of the Black Horse Hotel, Barnard Castle. Ridley
lost his life on 3rd August 1942 when, as a crew member on M.V.Tricula,
the ship was hit by three torpedoes from U-108 and sank rapidly
about 250 miles north east of Trinidad. He is remembered on the
Tower Hill Merchant Navy Memorial (Panel 111). |

of Benjamin and Mary Elizabeth Leaske and husband of Annie nee Robinson.
Crispin was a Cargo Steamer taken over by the Admiralty early in
the Second World War. On February 3rd 1941 she was torpedoed by
German submarine U-107 about 500 miles west of Ireland. She sank
on the following day with the loss of the Captain, 7 officers and
12 ratings, one of whom was Jarvis. He is commemorated on the Chatham
Naval Memorial. |

1942, he died in Japanese hands on 24th October 1943 and is remembered
on the Singapore Memorial (Column 37).
A lychgate, which he designed shortly after his capture was re-erected
in December 2003 at the National Memorial Arboretum, Lichfield,
Staffordshire.

Reserve, he was the son of James Robert and Mary Sutherland at Unst,
Shetland. Samuel was taken ill at sea, landed at Cape Town, and
sent back to England where he died on 20th March 1940, aged 55,
at the Darlington Memorial Hospital, leaving a widow and family.
His funeral was held at Barnard Castle. |

up to the Belgium border in late March 1940, and were attacked by
the Germans on 19th May 1940. Matthew became the first Barnard Castle
casualty of the war when he was killed in this action. He is buried
at Laurensart, Belgium. |

1941, whilst serving on Submarine P.32, he lost his life due to

in France. He was killed on 29th July 1944 when a mortar hit the
big gun he was firing. He is buried at Banneville-la-Campagne War

1944 and is buried in Tilly-sur-Seulles War Cemetery. |
