The memorial is located in John and Josephene Bowes Museum Park, to the right of the park entrance. It takes the form of an obelisk surmounting a plinth with five steps. The First World War names are inscribed on the plinth; the Second World War names can be found on a separate granite slab placed on the steps

GOLDSMITH

Theodore
Leading Aircraftsman in the Royal Air Force, service number 576580, son of Mr & Mrs Eric Waller Goldsmith of Spring Grove Cottage, Newgate, Barnard Castle, (previously of Weeton Road, Kings Lynn). Captured on 8th March 1942 by the Japanese, he died on 29th October 1944 whilst being held prisoner of war in Java. Commemorated on the Singapore Memorial, Column 438.

Petty Officer Stoker in the Royal Navy, service number D/KX 81959, son of Wallace and Christine Gregory, husband of Annie nee Young of Dawson Road, Barnard Castle. Killed in action on 2nd May 1942 whilst serving on H.M.S. Foresight. He is commemorated on the Plymouth Memorial.

A Guardsman with the Coldstream Guards, service number 2657829. Husband of Belle and son of Annie and the late James Holroyd of 2, Dene Road, Barnard Castle. Killed on active service on Christmas Day 1942, he is buried in Medjez-el-Bab Cemetery, Beja, Tunisia.

James
Private serving with the 6th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, service number 4454346. Son of Mr & Mrs Stobbs of Mission Yard, Bank, Barnard Castle. Wounded during the Battle of Alamein, he died of his wounds at a field ambulance on 27th September 1942, and is buried in El Alemein War Cemetery Plot XIII. Row 3. Grave 10.

KITCHEN

Rridley Joseph Alfred
Third Engineer Officer in the Merchant Navy, the son of Alfred and Helga Kitching of the Black Horse Hotel, Barnard Castle. Ridley lost his life on 3rd August 1942 when, as a crew member on M.V.Tricula, the ship was hit by three torpedoes from U-108 and sank rapidly about 250 miles north east of Trinidad. He is remembered on the Tower Hill Merchant Navy Memorial (Panel 111).

LEASKE

Jarvis Johnson Ridley
Yeoman of Signals on HMS Crispin, service number C/JX.133574, son of Benjamin and Mary Elizabeth Leaske and husband of Annie nee Robinson. Crispin was a Cargo Steamer taken over by the Admiralty early in the Second World War. On February 3rd 1941 she was torpedoed by German submarine U-107 about 500 miles west of Ireland. She sank on the following day with the loss of the Captain, 7 officers and 12 ratings, one of whom was Jarvis. He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.

Edward Henry
[Spelt McKIE on CWGC] Private 4453656, Durham Light Infantry. Died 4 February 1945. Aged 41. Son of Edward Henry and Mary Ann Elizabeth McKie, of South Shields. Buried in BARNARD CASTLE (ST. MARY) CHURCH CEMETERY, Durham. Section H. Grave 40.

MARQUISS

Thomas Henry
A Sergeant in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, service number 988208, the son of John Thomas and Hannah Todd Marquiss of 11, Vane Road, Barnard Castle. Lost his life on 9th July 1941 when, as a crew member of Handley Page Hampden AD924 on an operation over Belgium, his plane was shot down 500 metres east of Dilsen. Thomas is buried at Dilsen Churchyard, Belgium.

PICKERSGILL

Cecil Douglas

A Captain with 287 Field Company, 18th Division, Royal Engineers, service number 56815, the son of William John and Jane Ann Pickersgill of the Unicorn Hotel, Bowes. Cecil lived at 5, Dene Road, Barnard Castle with his wife Violet. Taken Prisoner of War on 15th February 1942, he died in Japanese hands on 24th October 1943 and is remembered on the Singapore Memorial (Column 37).

A lychgate, which he designed shortly after his capture was re-erected in December 2003 at the National Memorial Arboretum, Lichfield, Staffordshire.

RIDSDALE

Francis Ralph aka Frank
Private 4453678, The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment). Died 25 December 1943. Aged 23. Son of Charles and Mabel Ridsdale. In 1939 Charles and Mabel were living at 15 Kirk View, Barnard Castle (The 1939 Register on Findmypast) although Frank was not at home at that time. He was the husband of Eileen May Ridsdale of Bockleton, Worcestershire. Buried in CASSINO WAR CEMETERY, Italy. Plot VII. Row C. Grave 19.

ROBERTS

David
Private 5255352, 10th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment. Soon after enlisting with the Worcestershire Regiment, he was transferred to Northern Ireland where he died in an accident on 28th August 1940. Aged 24. Son of Benjamin and Mary Annie Roberts; husband of Alice Roberts, of Cockfield. Buried in COCKFIELD CEMETERY, Durham. Line G.1. Grave 9.

Killed in action on 5th January 1944 whilst serving in Italy with the Central Mediterranean Forces and is buried at Cassino War Cemetery, Italy. Plot XVIII. Row A. Grave 6.

STODDART

[Albert] Edward
Royal Navy Telegraphist, service number C/SSX29880, the son of Mr & Mrs A.E.Stoddart of Acomb, Yorkshire. Serving on H.M.S.Lightning, escorting troop and supply ships between Algiers and Bone, all the crew were lost when the Lightning was sunk by German Torpedo Boat 5-55. No known grave. He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.

SUTHERLAND

Samuel
A ship’s carpenter, and also in service with the Royal Naval Reserve, he was the son of James Robert and Mary Sutherland at Unst, Shetland. Samuel was taken ill at sea, landed at Cape Town, and sent back to England where he died on 20th March 1940, aged 55, at the Darlington Memorial Hospital, leaving a widow and family. His funeral was held at Barnard Castle.

WALKER

Alan Lowther
A Sergeant/Observer with 82 Squadron Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, service number 983838, the son of Henry Alderson and Agnes Walker of Elmdale, Vane Road, Barnard Castle. Alan was killed in action in the Sudan on 28th May 1941 when his plane, a Bristol Blenheim AVA, V6457, failed to return from an operational flight. He is remembered at the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey. Able Seaman, service number P/JX.132148, joined the Royal Navy in 1927. Son of Mr & Mrs Charles Wilkinson of 2, Pearson Terrace, Barnard Castle. Married to Louise Gardner, resident at Copnor, Portsmouth. Killed on 17th December 1940 when his ship, H.M.S. Acheron, hit a mine off the Isle of Wight. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Panel29, Column 3.

WILSON

Matthew
Corporal with the 2nd Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, service number 4453646, son of William and Jane Wilson of Cleveland Road, Barnard Castle, husband of Florence Lucille and father of Margaret. The 2nd Battalion moved to France in late September 1939, moved up to the Belgium border in late March 1940, and were attacked by the Germans on 19th May 1940. Matthew became the first Barnard Castle casualty of the war when he was killed in this action. He is buried at Laurensart, Belgium.

WINTER

James
Able Seaman, service number F/JX147924, the son of Mr & Mrs Thomas Winter of 69, Bridgegate, Barnard Castle. On 23rd August 1941, whilst serving on Submarine P.32, he lost his life due to an explosion (either internal or a mine) off Tripoli, Libya. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Memorial (Panel 50, Column 1).

WINTER

Joseph Howard
A Private, originally joining the Green Howards, the son of Mr & Mrs J.H.Winter of 20, Dunelm Square, Barnard Castle. Shot in the leg on D Day, he came home on leave and was not keen to return, although he did. He was moved to the Yorks & Lancs Regiment in France. He was killed on 29th July 1944 when a mortar hit the big gun he was firing. He is buried at Banneville-la-Campagne War Cemetery.

WRIGHT

Cecil [Woodward]
A Sergeant in the Royal corps of Signals, the son of Mr & Mrs H Wright of Guisborough Road, Nunthorpe. Whilst his father had retired as stationmaster at Bowes, Cecil was employed at Barnard Castle and lived at 31, Bede Road. He was killed in action on 9th August 1944 and is buried in Tilly-sur-Seulles War Cemetery.

WRIGHT

William
Driver William Wright of the Signals Corps, son of Mr & Mrs J. Wright of Coronation Street, Barnard Castle. Died of his wounds in the Middle East on 20th March 1943.
