The memorial is to be found in St Katharine’s Church, Little Bardfield. The church, and the war memorial, underwent a restoration programme in 2007. The main tablet is white veined red marble within a wooden surround. Carved and gilded. The flags to each side of the memorial are carved wood, painted and gilded. The 1914-1918 war memorial commemorates one-fifth of the men of military age from Little Bardfield who died in the Great War. The names have been sorted into alphabetical order here for ease of reading and research.

COE	William Walter	Gunner 130700, 150th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died 8 November 1918. Born Little Sampford, Essex, enlisted Wandsworth, Surrey, resident Tooting, Surrey. Husband of Mrs. L. A. Coe, of 44, Westcote Rd., Mitcham Lane, Streatham, London. Buried in TERLINCTHUN BRITISH CEMETERY, WIMILLE, Pas de Calais, France. Plot X. Row C. Grave 24.
COOTE	Ernest Harold John	He had been invalided out before his death. Died 17 April 1917. Aged 20. In the 1901 census he was aged 4, son of George and Eliza A Coote (nee Burgess), born Great Bardfield, Essex, resident Marks Wood, Little Bardfield. In the 1911 census he was the son of George and Eliza Coote, aged 14, Farm Labourer, born Littler Bardfield, resident Markswood, Little Bardfield. His death was registered in the Dunmow District, Essex, in the April to June Quarter 1917. His attestation papers give him as attesting in 1913 as Private 1706,1/5th Battalion, Essex Regiment, aged 17, born Great Bardfield. He was discharged from Tooting Military Hospital 13 November 1916 as being no longer physically fit for War Service. Aged 20. Height 6 feert, girth 36 inches, complexion dark, eyes brown, hair dark brown, trade Labourer, discharged to Markswood Farm, Little Bardfield. He had served abroad between 3 June and 11 Ocotber 1916. He had disembarked at Alexandria 13 June 1916, joined his battalion at Sgallufa 20 June 1916;he was admitted to hospital 14 July 1916 at Shallufa, then admitted N.Y.D., Suez the same day. He had an abcess on his neck in August 1916, admitted to N.Y.D. Suez 2 September 1916 before finally being admitted to 27th General Hospital with Tubercule of Lung 22 September 1916. He was invalided to England on the "Gloucester Castle" from Alexandria 7 October 1916. His employer at Markswood Farm is listed as Major Marsham, of Little Bardfield. He was finally discharged 13 November 1916.
COWELL	George Basil	Air Mechanic 2nd Class 291256, 6th Balloon Section, Royal Air Force. Died of wounds 22 February 1919. Buried in TERLINCTHUN BRITISH CEMETERY, WIMILLE, Pas de Calais, France. Plot XIII. Row E. Grave 31.
DRANE	Alfred	Private 4049, 32nd Battalion, Australian Infantry, A.I.F. Died of wounds 29 July 1918. Aged 27. Bord Little Bardfield. Agricultural Farm Worker. Emigrated to Australia aged 20. Son of Moses and Emily Drane, of Church End, Little Bardfield, Braintree, England. Buried in MERICOURT-L'ABBE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Somme, France. Plot III. Row G. Grave 5.
GUNN	George Frederick	Private 5804, 4/7th Battalion, Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment) transferred to 255568, 426th Agricultural Company, Labour Corps. Died in United Kingdom 17 July 1917 (18 July on CWGC0. Aged 28. Born Great Dunmow, Essex, enlisted Enfield, Middlesex, resident Bush Hill Park, Middlesex. Son of Charles F. Gunn, of Merks Hill, Great Dunmow; husband of Elizabeth May Sams (formerly Gunn), of Oxen End, Little Bardfield. Buried in LITTLE BARDFIELD (ST. KATHERINE) CHURCHYARD, Essex.
MARSH	Walter Arthur	Private 13181, 10th Battalion, Essex Regiment. Killed in action 20 July 1916. Born Belfast, enlisted Camberwell, Surrey, resident Little Bardfield. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 10 D.
MEARS	Edward de Quincy	Second Lieutenant, 10th Battalion, Essex Regiment. Killed in action 14 July 1916. Aged 23. Son of the Rev. Edward Mears and Mary Florence Mears, of Little Bardfield Rectory, Braintree, Essex. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 10 D.
PERRY	John	Lance Corporal G/18973, 6th Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Killed in action 7 September 1918. Aged 40.
