Compiled and copyright © Martin Edwards 2008
The
memorial is to be found at the road junction of Gladstone Way and The
Highway, Hawarden. It takes the form of a large obelisk with a gabled
apex, beneath which is an ogee headed moulded niche with crocketed finial
and flanking decorative pilasters. The wall behind contains name panels.
The site is elevated from the roadside reached by 8 steps. Inside the
monument is a sculpted figure of Christ on the cross. There are 231
names for World War 1 and 105 for World War 2. The memorial was extensively
restored in 1987-1988. The artist was Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and the
memorial was uneviled by Henry N Gladstone 11th November 1920.
