CYFARTHFA
CASTLE SCHOOL WAR MEMORIAL
World War 1 &
2 - Detailed information
Compiled and Copyright © Amy Kitcher 2004
Two
separate memorials exist for Cyfartha Castle Grammar School, Merthyr
Tydfil. The first for World War 1 and the second World War 2. Remarkably
there are more entries for World War 2 than World War 1. Photographs
of the school can be found on the Merthyr
Tydfil - Cyfarthfa Castle Grammar School web pages. The plaque for
1939-45 was in the upstairs hall next to the Latin classroom of Miss
Trehearne, the Roll of Honour for the Great War 1914-18 was located
elsewhere. The World War 1 plaque was unveiled circa 1920's. The World
War 2 plaque was unveiled 1 January 1947 and the ceremony was attended
by local clergy and dignitaries. Cyfarthfa means "Place of the
barking (dog)" in Welsh and the school crest reflects this.
