MAJOR FRANCIS de BEAUVOIR BELL, 2nd BATTN. THE NORFOLK REGT., was wounded at the Battle of Shaiba, Persian Gulf, on the 14th May, 1915, and died of his wounds on the 24th of that month at the Basra Base Hospital. He was born in Guernsey on 7th May, 1866, and was the eldest son of the late Colonel William Bell, C.B., A.D.C. to Queen Victoria, who was for over fifty years Government Secretary of Guernsey.

He was educated at Elizabeth College, Guernsey, and afterwards at Exeter College, Oxford, where he took his degree in 887. He passed into the R.M.C., Sandhurst, as a University Candidate in 1888, and received his commission in the Norfolk Regiment in May, 1890.

He became Lieutenant in 1891, and from November, 1897, to November, 1901, was Adjutant of the 2nd Battalion, reaching the rank of Captain in 1900. He served in the South African War, taking part in operations in the Orange Free State, including the operations at Paardeberg, actions at Poplar Grove, Karee Siding, Vet River, and Zand River ; operations in. the Transvaal in May and June, 1900, including actions near Johannesburg and Pretoria ; and again in the Transvaal from November, 1900, to May, 1902. For his services he was mentioned in Despatches (" London Gazette," 10th September, 1901), and received the Queen's medal with three clasps and the King's medal with two clasps. From September, 1902, to September, 1907, he was Adjutant of the 3rd Battalion of his regiment (Militia). At the conclusion of his period of employment, after serving with the 1st Battalion for a year, he was promoted Major in January, 1909, and at once joined the 2nd Battalion at Gibraltar, going with them to India in 1911.

He sailed with his battalion in November, 1914, for the Persian Gulf, and took part in the actions which led to the fall of Basra, and, later, in the taking of Kurna. For his services at Shaiba he was mentioned in Despatches (" Gazette " of India), 14th August, 1915.

Major Bell married Mabel Grace, third daughter of Colonel Le Mottee, Templemore, Fermoy, Ireland.

CAPTAIN WALTER ADRIAN CARNE-GIE BOWDEN-SMITH, 4th BATTN. ROYAL FUSILIERS (CITY OF LONDON REGIMENT), was born at Guernsey on the 25th September, 1881. He was the son of Walter Baird Bowden-Smith, Esq., of Vernalls, Lyndhurst, Hants. His great-great- grandfather was William, seventh Earl of Northesk, who was third in command at Trafalgar. Captain Bowden-Smith was educated at Rugby, where he was in the Shooting and Gymnastic Eights ; and at the R.M.C., Sandhurst. He was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in August, 1900 ; Lieutenant in February, 1904 ; and Captain in November, 1909. He served in the Tibet Expedition, 1903-04, being wounded at Gyantse. He received the medal and clasp. Captain Bowden-Smith was dangerously wounded at Mons while bringing up reinforcements under a fierce fire on the 23rd August, and died on the 27th or 28th of the same month in the Convent of St. Joseph, Maissieres, Belgium.
He was a member of the Junior Army and Navy Club.

LIEUTENANT CECIL FRANCIS CROUSAZ, 1st BATTN. THE SOUTH STAFFORDSHIRE REGIMENT, was the youngest son of W. de P. Crousaz, Jurat of the Royal Court of Guernsey, and was born in that island on the 7th December, 1888.

He was educated at Elizabeth College, Guernsey, and the R.M.C., Sandhurst, entering the South Staffordshire Regiment in November, 1909, and becoming Lieutenant in March, 1912.

He served with his battalion in South Africa and Gibraltar from 1910-14. He won the Featherweight Amy Boxing Cup at Aldershot in 1913.

He was killed in a trench at Zonnebeke, near Ypres, by shell on the 31st October, 1914.

Battery Quartermaster Sergeant 166198, 2nd Battalion, Canadian Pioneers. Committed suicide by breaking away from escort and leaping overboard at 4.15pm, drowned, suffering from Melancholia, 19 September 1917, while being repatriated to Canada aboard hospital ship. Born in Guernsey 23 October 1894. Husband of Ela Desperques, of 319, Talbot Street, St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. Clerk by trade. Previously served in the Army Service Corps. Attested 11 October 1915 at St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada, aged 31 years 11½ months, height 5 feet 5½ inches, fair complexion, brown eyes, dark brown hair, religious denomination Methodist. Landed Havre, France 8 March 1916. No known grave. Commemorated at HOLLYBROOK MEMORIAL, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire. DUGMORE, WILLIAM FRANCIS BROUGHAM RADCLYFFE, Lieut., was born 1 Oct. 1868, eldest son of the late Capt. Francis Dugmore, 64th Regt., and the Hon. Evelyn Mary, daughter of the 2nd Baron Brougham and Faux. He was educated at the Oratory, Egdbaston, and at St. Mary's College, Oscott, and was commissioned in the Prince of Wales's North Staffordshire Regt. 20 June, 1894, as Second Lieutenant. He was employed in the Uganda Protectorate 27 Dec. 1899, to 23 Jan. 1902, serving with the King's African Rifles in the East African Arab War, taking part in the operations against the Mazrui rebels (Medal); in Unyoro, 1896-97 (Medal), and in the Uganda Mutiny in 1897-98, when he averted the threatened insurrection of 500 Sudanese. He was mentioned in Despatches, received the Medal and clasp, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 24 Jan. 1899]: "William Francis Brougham Radclyffe Dugmore, Lieut., North Staffordshire Regt. In recognition of services during the recent operations in Uganda." The Insignia were presented by the Queen at Osborne 1 Feb. 1899. He had been promoted to Lieutenant 12 Oct. 1897. He served in the South African War from 1899 to 1902, on Special Service from 6 May, 1901, to 31 Aug. 1901 ; and wag promoted to Captain 12 Jan. 1901. He was employed with Kitchener's Fighting Scouts, took part in the operations in the Tranvsaal to 31 May, 1902, and received the Queen's Medal with five clasps. He was on Special Service with the Somaliland Field Force 7 Nov. 1902, to 27 May, 1904, taking part in the operations in Somaliland (Medal with clasp). He was employed under the Liberian Development Company 27 March, 1906, to 17 Sept. 1907; and retired in 1909. In 1914 he was Second-in-Command, 72nd Highlanders, Canada. He served in the European War from 1914, and the London Gazette of 25 Aug. 1916, announced the appointment of Capt. W. F. B. R. Dugmore, D.S.O., Reserve of Officers, to be temporary Major (24 March, 1916). He was Second-in-Command, 72nd Highlanders, Canada. He was killed in action 12 June, 1917. He had married, in 1910, Phyllis, daughter of J. Wilson Usher.

CAPTAIN FRANCIS WILLIAM DURAND, 3rd BATTN. ROYAL MUN- STER FUSILIERS, was born on the 29th January, 1875, at Earley Vicarage, Berkshire, the son of the Rev. Havilland Durand, M.A., Vicar of Earley. He was educated at Elizabeth College, Guernsey, where he won the quarter-mile, and was second in the one hundred yards race in 1889, winning two cups.

Captain Durand was gazetted to the 3rd Royal Guernsey Light Infantry (Militia) as 2nd Lieutenant in 1891, and in 1895 he joined the Rhodesian Horse. He served in the Matabeleland campaign with the Gwelo Field Force, receiving the Matabeleland medal, 1896 ; and in the Mashonaland campaign with the Mashonaland Field Force, receiving the clasp for Mashonaland, 1897.

From 1899-1901 he was employed in the African 'Transcontinental Survey through German East Africa, and in 1901-02 with the Tanganyika Concessions Expedition to Katanga, Congo Free State. In 1903 he served in the Zanzibar Protectorate under the Foreign Office, being Secretary and A.D.C. to the First Minister.

In 1906 he was promoted Captain in the 3rd Munster Fusiliers, remaining seconded for duty under the Foreign Office. In 1907 he was Acting Commandant of the Zanzibar Military l'olice, and Acting Governor, Central Jail. In this year he received the Zanzibar Order of " El Aliyeh."

Returning to England he, in 1908, passed the School of Musketry at Hythe. In 1909 he was again in civil employment in Zanzibar, as 2nd Class Magistrate and Governor of the District Jail, and in 1911 was second in command of the Zanzibar Armed Constabulary. In 1912 he passed in all subjects for promotion to the rank of Field Officer, being one of only five officers specially mentioned in the Examiner's Report (May, 1912) to the Army Council. In 1914 he received the decoration of the 3rd Class Brilliant Star of Zanzibar.

On the mobilisation for the Great War, the 5th August, 1914, he joined the 3rd Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers, and went to Bere Island. On the 8th September he joined the 2nd Battalion in France, and was present at the Battles of the Aisne and the Marne. Tie was killed on the 22nd September, 1914, while leading his men in an attempt to retake trenches between Givenchy and Festubert, near La Bassée.

Captain Durand was a member of the Naval and Military and of the Sports Clubs. While in Africa lie enjoyed much big-game shooting. lie married, in 1903, Geraldine Vesey, daughter of the late Rev. John W. Hawtrey, of Aldin House, Slough, and St. Michael's, Westgateon-Sea.

DURAND, HAVILLAND MONTAGUE, Private, No. 720, 13th Battn., Australian Imperial Force, yst. t. of the late Rev. Havilland Durand, for 13 years Vicar of Earley, co. Berks (died 1884), by his wife, Mary (Moulin Bud, Guernsey), dau. of the Rev. Montague John Gregg Hawtrey ; b. Earley Vicarage, 21 Dec. 1883; educ. Elizabeth College, Guernsey, and University College, Durham ; went to Australia in Sept. 1911, and settled at Brisbane, where he was engaged in teaching. Volunteered on the outbreak of the war and joined the Commonwealth Expeditionary Force, Sept. 1914 ; left for Egypt In Jan. and was killed in action two days after the landing at Gallipoli, 25 April. 1911 ; unm. His Capt. wrote : "His comrades having expended nearly all their ammunition, volunteers were asked for, to go to the beach for more ; it was necessary to proceed down a fire-swept gully, then on to a shell-swept beach, and return. Havilland volunteered to do this. He got to the beach and returned by way of the gully again. He had done his duty and saved our line. I should like to mention that he was loved by officers and men alike. He was selected and especially trained for a battn. scout, work that always requires a lot of intelligence and tact. The Colonel assured me that if Durand had not arrived with the ammunition his comrades, who were in an isolated position, would have been annihilated and our line would have been broken." He was supposed to have been killed after bringing up the ammunition, but another letter gave the information that he was killed the day after, whilst working in the trench. He was buried by his comrades on a hill at Gaba Tepe, and a rough wooden cross marks the place where he lies. Another letter said : "The landing must have been awful, and all who lived, if only for a day, did heroic work, as the few remaining officers say each man deserved a V.C. The Australians were simply magnificent"

Guernsey, Channel Islands, eldest son of Colonel John Edward Le Mottee, retired Army Officer, A.D.C. to King Edward VII. and King George V., and of Laura Lukin, daughter of Fred Lukin, of Guernsey. He was educated at Twyford School, Rugby, and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and joined the Army 21 Jan. 1893. The following are extracts from letters : " You will have heard by now that we are unable to trace the whereabouts of your husband. He very pluckily went forward on the morning of 27th Sept. to a place called Fosse 8, where there were very heavy casualties and fighting and went into the trenches to rally the troops, and he did not return, and all inquiries failed to get any news of him. The position he went up to was retaken by the Germans, so there is a chance that he may have been slightly wounded and unable to get away, and that. he is in their hands. I cannot, say how sorry I am at this bad news. Your husband was a great friend of mine, and we are all very sad at his being unaccounted for. We can only hope he is in good hands and some news may come through of him soon.—With very sincere sympathy from us all." I am most grieved at this distressing news. But you must, not despair, in spite of all the anxiety you will feel, for until there is definite news hope cannot be gone. Any news I get, of course you shall have, but it is hard to get any. I am so very, very sorry for you, for your anxiety must be terrible, and my most heartfelt sympathy is with you. Your husband was such a help to me always, and I pray that better news may be forthcoming." "I was very sorry to hear the sad news. Your husband was a great. friend of mine, amid we worked together for all those months so happily. You know how touch I grieve his loss, and how sincerely I sympathize with you." "I am sorry to say there is no more news, but I do not think we can expect any now unless it conies through from the German side. A message was received from your husband about 5.45, 27 Sept. 1915, saying he was coming back, and asking for a car to be sent to Vermelles (the limit for cars) to meet, him. As the situation was an anxious one, General Thesiger went down to Vermelles in the car to meet, your husband and hear the latest, news from him of Fosse S. After General Thesiger had started, affairs at Fosse 8 became very critical, and the General evidently went up there to try and re-establish the situation. Your husband must. have gone with him, and has not been heard of since. I feel so much with you, and one cannot do anything to clear up the situation; but, I don't despair, as I don't see any reason why he should not be in the hands of the Germans."

Driver 91734 Royal Field Artillery. Died of wounds on 2 November 1917 at the War Hospital, Birkby, Huddersfield, England. He left a widow Maud Beatrice Le Vasseur (nee Cannon). He was the son of Jules and Maria Le Vasseur of 52 the Bordage St Peter Port Guernsey. His brother Reginald Clifford Le Vasseur was wounded and died in 1914 and brother Harold Le Vasseur joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1917.

Lecky, of 1, Newlands Terrace, Guernsey. Buried in CHAPELLE-D'ARMENTIERES OLD MILITARY CEMETERY , Nord, France. Plot/Row/Section A. Grave 10.

Extract from The Bond of Sacrifice Part 1 August to June December 1914 :

LIEUTENANT AVERELL LECKY, PRINCE OF WALES'S LEINSTER REGIMENT (ROYAL CANADIANS), was born in Guernsey in 1885, and was the son of Lieutenant-Colonel John Gage Lecky (retired), late of the Gordon Highlanders, and a grandson of Hugh Lecky, Beardiville, County Antrim.

Lieutenant Lecky was educated at Elizabeth College, Guernsey, and received his commission in the Leinster Regiment from the Royal Guernsey Militia in 1908, becoming Lieutenant in October, 1910. He served with his battalion in India and with the West African Field Force in Sierra Leone for two years in the suppression of savage customs, services for which he was highly commended by his Commanding Officer, and in the course of which he was wounded by a poisoned arrow. In the Great War he was shot through the head while leading his men in an attack on the enemy's trenches near Armentieres, and died on the 19th October, 1914.

Apprentice ship’s officer, SS Trewyn (St Ives), Merchant Navy. Lost when his ship was torpedoed off Ushant by U28 on 30 March 1916. Aged 19. Born 14 April 1896, St Sampson Guernsey. Son of Ephraim and Antoinette Adèle Monsell (née Thomas) of St Sampson Guernsey. In the 1901 census he was aged 4, born St Sampsons, Guernsey, Channel Islands, son of Ephraim and Antoinette Monsell, resident Church Lane, St. Sampson, Guernsey. In the 1911 census he was aged 14, born St Sampsons, Guernsey, Channel Islands, son of Ephraim and Antoinette A Monsell, resident New Road, St Sampsons, Guernsey. Commemorated on TOWER HILL MEMORIAL, London.

Note: The date of death recorded by CWGC is 24 March 1918 but it is clear from Board of Trade records (Registry of Shipping and Seamen: Agreements and Crew Lists, Series II at TNA BT99/3223) that the date was an estimate.

Born 28 November 1896 in Saint Pierre Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands, son of William Hunton Anderson and Mary Elizabeth (nee Torode) Mudge, name registered as George Hnery Anderson. Private 21866 [SDGW] or 21868 [CWGC], 7/8th Battalion, Princess Victoria's (Royal Irish Fusiliers). Killed in action 27 March 1917. Born Dartmouth, Devon, enlisted Guernsey, resident St Peter Port, Guernsey. Husband of Mrs. M. E. Mudge, of 6, Vauvent St., St. Peter Port, Guernsey. William Henry Mudge's birth was registered in the January to March Quarter 1891 in the Totnes Registration District, Devon (Dartmouth is within this Registration District). Buried in LA LAITERIE MILITARY CEMETERY, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot I. Row B. Grave 14.

Lieutenant Colonel, 11th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps. Died 24 March 1918. Aged 40. Son of O. de L. Priaulx. Served in the South African War. Awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) No known grave. Commemorated on POZIERES MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Panel 61 to 64.

PRIAULX, G. K. (D.S.O. L.G. 18.6.17); b. 15.9.77; 2nd s. of O. de L. Priaulx ; educ. at Harrow and Sandhurst; commissioned 60th Rifles 23.2.98; Lt. 51.10.99; Capt. 22.1.02. He fought through the S. African War, 1899-1002 (Despatches twice ; Queen's Medal, 6 clasps ; King's Medal, 2 clasps). He went to France in Aug. 1914, and was dangerously wounded in Sept. of that year, and again in Sept. 1915, at Loos, when he was in command of his battalion. After his recovery he was appointed to the command of another battalion, and in March, 1917, won the D.S.O. Lt.-Col. Priaulx was killed in action on 25.3.18.
