BLACKMOOR WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed Information

The Blackmoor World War 1 and 2 memorials are to be found in St Matthew's Church, Honey Lane, Blackmoor, Hampshire. The World War 1 memorial takes the form of a stone tablet set in wooden frame with indented corners, carved cornice and moulded borders. Incised red and black lettering with a carved, gilded and painted wooden frame. At top of frame is lion surmounted by crown, both gilded, surrounded by painted green laurel wreath entwined with gilded ribbon; around the inner side of the border are carved and gilded roses with carved, gilded, and red and green painted roses and leaves in each indented corner of the frame. The Second World War memorial takes the form of a wooden board with curved top and bottom corners also with carved, gilt lettering in Roman capitals and the top edge of moulded borders gilded. There are 36 names for World War 1 and 8 names for World War 2.

In the 1911 census he was aged 23, born Wood Green, Middlesex, a Photographer, married, resident Deadwater, Bordon Camp, Headley, Hampshire, height 5 feet 9½ inches, weight 9st 10lbs, chest 38-40 inches. Attested 8 December 1915 at Alton, Hampshire, aged 27 years 8 months, a Photographer, resident Whitehall Villa, Borden Heights. Mobilized 31 August 1916, joined at Grove Park 1 September 1916. No known grave. Commemorated on Loos Memorial, pas de Calais, France. Panel 139 (Addenda).
