COWES WAR MEMORIAL

Compiled and copyright © Martin Edwards 2010

The Cowes memorial takes the form of a partially destroyed cenotaph. Originally the memorial stood in the High Street, Cowes, at the junction with Market Hill but suffered damage from bombing during World War 2, 4th-5th May 1942, and was re-erected at Northwood House, Cowes, without being restored. It was orginally unveiled by Major-general J E B Seely on 30th March 1921. The memorial was made friom Cornish granite and was originally 13 feet high with the names cast on bronze tablets affixed to it. A list of names that were originally affixed can be found in reports of the unveiling and dedication ceremony.
