MARTYR WORTHY WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed Information

The Purbeck stone memorial is in the form of a Celtic cross standing on a raised square plinth on a small traffic island in Church Lane at the junction with the B3047 main road. The names of those commemorated from World War One are inscribed in a panel on the side of the plinth which faces the main road and the names of those from World War Two have been added on a second panel on the opposite side.

An ‘In Memorium’ plaque in St Swithun’s church, Martyr Worthy commemorates three grandsons of Benjamin Nevill of Chilland who died in World War One. These three men were not residents of Martyr Worthy and their names are not on the stone memorial. Their details are shown as a footnote below.

Second Lieutenant 7th Dragoon Guards (Princess Royal's). Died 01/12/1917 Age 19. Son of Dr. Reid and of Lady Watts of 8 Lygon Place, London and formerly Fulling Mill, Easton. Commemorated Cambrai Memorial, Louverval Panel 1. Also at the Greyfriars Episcopal Church Kirkcudbright which was renovated and donated to the Scottish Episcopal Church by Lady Watts as a memorial to her son.

Leading Stoker No. 'P/KX 83084' H.M.S. Kashmir Royal Navy. Died 23/05/1941 when the ship was sunk in an air attack south of Crete. Age 26. Son of Albert Harry and Alice Rose Fullick and husband of Esther Rose Fullick of Compton, Winchester. Commemorated Portsmouth Naval Memorial Panel 54, Column 2 and on Compton and Shawford war memorials.
