The
Ross on Wye District War memorial is to be found in Prospect Gardens
overlooking River Wye, Ross on Wye. It takes the form of a Cornish Cross
on two-stepped convex base surmounted by square pedestal, tapering shaft
and cross; the inscription is in black lettering on the sides of the
pedestal and top base, an additional small tablet has been placed on
one side for the Falklands. There are 105 names for World War 1, 44
for World War 2 and one for the Falklands. The memorial was originally
unveiled 4 July 1920, it cost £400; details appeared in the Ross
Gazette 7 July 1921; it was rededicated 9 November 2008. In 2008 repairs
to the park and cemetery dividing wall led to the discovery of Roman
remains around, and beneath, the war memorial. The memorial was dismantled
and stored to allow for excavation work to take place. It was then re-sited
a short distance away. Around 1980 two German field guns that were originally
sited with memorial were removed.
