BISHOPS STORTFORD WAR MEMORIAL
World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Stewart Norman 2006
additional information Martin Edwards
The
memorial is dedicated to the men who fell in both World War 1 and World
War 2 and is in the form of a square obelisque and is located in the
Town Park, Bishops Stortford, just off the A1250 where it crosses the
River Stort. There are 208 names for World War 1 and 106 for World War
2. A lot of this information has come from the local newspaper, Herts
and Essex Observer in the Births, Marriages and Deaths section
and the names have then been tied with the Commonwealth War Graves Commisison,
Soldiers Died in the Great War CD and Army Roll of Honour - World War
II CD entries.

Obituary:
In Loving Memory of Pte.
Alexander Black Machray (Killed
in action in France).The
sad news was received from official sources on Tuesday by Mr.
and Mrs F. Machray, of Apton Road, that their second son, Private
Alexander Black Machray, Royal Fusiliers, was killed in action
in France on September 21st. On the same day the bereaved parents
were the recipients of a letter from an officer in their son’s
Regiment supplementing the official intelligence. In this letter
the officer wrote: “I deeply regret having to inform you
that your son, Private A. B. Machray, was killed in action during
operations of the 20th to 21st inst. As you have read, the Battalion
was in an attack at this time and as almost all of the men in
your son’s section became casualties, I’m afraid
I cannot give you much information concerning his death. Although
I have not known him for very long I had found his worth as
a soldier and a man, and with his comrades he was very popular,
and they wish to join me in this expression of deepest symphony.”
Deceased was a young man of considerable ability and had a promising
career. Before enlisting he was employed as a clerk in office
of the Town Surveyor Mr. R. S. Scott, and was a valued member
of the Town Band. A member of a musical family, he was always
ready to give his services to musical efforts in the town, while
his hobby --sketching -- he proved himself to possess marked
ability. In outdoor sports also he was a footballer of merit.
Early in the war he offered his services, but was twice rejected
before ultimately enlisting under the Derby Scheme in January,
1916, when he was attached to the Suffolk Regiment. Subsequently
he was he was transferred to the Bedfordshire Regiment, with
whom he went to France in July last, soon after which he was
transferred to the London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers). He had
only been in France about eight weeks when he met his death.
In civilian life he was also employed by the Bishop’s
Stortford Gas Company as a clerk. He was in his 24th year, and
as a lad was a member of St. Michael’s Church Choir. His
parents have two other sons serving, Private Frank Machray,
in England with a labour battalion of the Suffolk Regiment;
and Private Charles Machray, Royal Army Medical Corps, serving
in Palestine. All three brothers, with their father, were members
of the Town Band.

Charles
David |
Able
Seaman J/20103, H.M.S. 'Queen Mary', Royal Navy. Lost with his
ship at the Battle of Jutland 31 May 1916. Aged 19. Son of Charles
William and Bessie Reynolds, of 41, Nursery Rd., Bishop's Stortford,
Herts. No known grave. Commemorated on Portsmouth Naval Memorial,
Hampshire. Column 13.
Note:
HMS Queen Mary was a Royal Navy battlecruiser, of the Queen Mary
class, however more generally viewed as a member of the similar
Lion class. She was armed with eight 13.5 inch (343 mm) guns,
displaced 27,000 tons, and was capable of steaming at 28 knots
(52 km/h). Externally she differed from her two half-sisters in
that she had round funnels (instead of oval), and had her 4 inch
guns all on the same deck.
Upon
commissioning, she joined the 1st Battlecruiser Squadron. On 28th
August 1914, she took part in the 1st Battle of Heligoland Bight.
She was under refit at the time of the Dogger Bank battle, so
she did not take part in that engagement. After completing her
refit, she re-joined the 1st Batttlecruiser Squadron.
She
was under the command of Captain Cecil I. Prowse at the Battle
of Jutland on 31st May 1916. She had fired about 150 13.5 in shells
and scored 4 hits on the SMS Seydlitz, but the Seydlitz hit back.
Queen Mary was first hit above the right gun on 'Q' turret; this
gun was out of action, but the left gun kept firing. Shortly after,
more 30.5 cm (12 inch) shells hit her forward near 'A' and 'B'
turrets, and another hit 'Q' turret. The forward magazine exploded,
the ship listed to port, and more explosions followed as the ship
was sinking. All but twenty of her 1,275 crew were lost (two of
the survivors were picked up by German ships). |

Note:
HMS Neptune was a Leander Class Light Cruiser, built by Portsmouth
Dockyard (Portsmouth, U.K.): Parsons, laid down 24th September
1931, launched 31st January 1933, commisisoned 23rd February
1934. On 19th December 1941, following the First Battle if the
Syrte, Force "K", consisting of light cruisers HMS
Neptune (Capt. R.C. O'Conor, RN), Aurora, Penelope with destroyers
Kandahar, Havock, Lance and Lively, sortied from malta in the
hope of intercepting the Italian convoy known to be heading
for Tripoli. At a point 20 nm E of Tripoli, Force "K"
entered an Italian miefield, laid by Italian cruiser force in
June 1941. At 01:06 hrs Neptune, leading the british column,
hit a mine and backed her engines but at 01:16 another mine
detonated under the stern, losing propellers and rudder and
going dead in the water. This left at the mercy of wind and
water in sea state 5 (heavy whitecaps), Neptune hit another
mine. Destroyer Kandahar, attempting to take her in tow, lost
her stern to another mine and had to be scuttled. As the SOP
(Senior Officer Present), Capt. O'Connor ordered Penelope to
keep away and, at 0400 hrs, a 4th mine detonated under the bridge
of Neptune, 5 minutes later she capsized and sank in position
33.15N, 13.30E. Due to the heavy seas and danger of further
mines, which prevented rescue operations, there was only one
survivor from a crew of 767.
