ST ALBANS, BARDWELL ROAD WAR MEMORIAL

The Bardwell Road memorial is istuated near the junction of Thorpe Road and Bardwell Road and commemorates the men lost from both roads. The only entrance to Bardwell Road in 1914 was via Thorpe Road. The memorial was on No. 1 Bardwell Road. Lance Corporal 17138, 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Died of wounds in United Kingdom 31st January 1916. Aged 25. Resident 7 Thorpe Road. Born, resident and enlisted St Albans. Son of William and Emily Gathard, of 7, Thorpe Rd., St. Albans. Buried in ST. ALBANS CEMETERY, Hertfordshire. Plot C. Row J. Grave 32. See also St Albans WW1 memorial.

WALDOCK

Ernest [Frederick George]

Rifleman C/437, 16th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps. Killed in action 21st July 1916. Aged 20. Resident 1 Thorpe Road. Born and enlisted St Albans. Son of William and Elizabeth Waldock, of 1, Thorpe Rd., St. Albans, Herts. Employed at Vyse's Hat factory, Rigmont Road, and his name appears on their memorial also. No known grave. Son of Mrs. Marien Emma Laughland, of 21, Spicer St., St. Albans. Formerly 224185, Royal Artillery. Buried in KORTRIJK (ST. JAN) COMMUNAL CEMETERY, Kortrijk, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Private G/40894, 4th Battalion, Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment). Killed in action 10th April 1917. Aged 36. Resident 10 Bardwell Road. Born and resident St Albans, enlisted Dover, Kent. Son of George and Maria Skinner, of St. Albans; husband of Annie Sarah Skinner, of 10, Bardwell Rd., St. Albans, Herts. Formerly G/16907, Royal West Kent Regiment.
