WOOLMER GREEN WAR MEMORIAL
World
War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Martin Edwards 2018
The
war memorial in the churchyard of St Michael’s and All Angels,
Mardleybury Road, Woolmer Green, was designed by Laurence A Turner (1882–1943):
architectural sculptor, carver, modeller and architect. It is made from
Bramley Fall Stone and takes the form of a Latin Cross on a tall, round,
tapering column with an octagonal base. This stands on a square plinth
which is placed at the centre of a three stepped base. The plinth has
recessed plaques on each side, three of which record the 11 names of
those who died in the First World War; on the steps leading up to the
memorial are the nine names of the men who fell in World War 2. The
last plaque carries the World War 1 inscription. The memorial was dedicated
and unveiled by Sir Charles Longmore 26 September 1920. The memorial
is a Grade II listed building.

Yet another lad from this village has given his life for King
and country. Pte. Ernest Sharp, M.G.C., Beds Regt., was reported
missing last summer, and after nine months suspense and anxiety
news has been received of his death in action on July 27, 1916,
in France. The deceased joined up in September, 1914, and had
served in France about 18 months. He was well known in this neighbourhood,
being in the employ of Mr. Darley, Knebworth, for some time. Much
sympathy is felt for the family, who have resided in the village
many years, the father being in the employ of Mr. S. Wallace for
over 30 years. Mrs. and Mrs. Sharp have three other sons in his
Majesty's Forces, viz: Arthur, Veterninary Section; Frank, Royal
Engineers; and Herbert, Royal Fusiliers.
