Funeral at Brampton
The
news of the death of Private William Allen, of the Grenadier Guards,
and son of Mr William Allen, of Brampton, which took place in Chelsea
Hospital on Friday, was received with feelings of deep regret in
the village.
Deceased,
who was 27 years of age, and the eldest son of Mr. Allen, was engaged
as a railway porter at the Midlany Railway station at Cresswell,
near Burton-on-Trent, up to the time when war broke out. He then
joined the Grenadier Guards, and as a soldier was making good progress
until he was laid aside by serious illness a week before his death.
Much sympathy is felt with the family, who are well-known in the
village.
The
funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon in the presence of a large
number of mourners including about thirty of the Brampton members
of the Hunts Reserve Cycle Battalion. The Rev. A. T. Thompson conducated
the service at the conclusion of which two buglers of the Hunts
Cyclists sounded the "Last Post."
The
family mourners were MR. and Mrs. William Allen (father and mother),
John, Alfred and Joe Allen (brothers), Mabel and Alice Allen (sisters),
Mrs. J. Allen (sister-in-law), and Mr. C. Sutor.
The
coffin was inscribed:-
