As the BEF engaged the Germans at Mons he was killed in action. Harry Murphy’s Regiment had a distinguished past, having the memorable nickname ‘The Diehards’ which they had earned during the Peninsula War in 1811. As the Germans attacked at Mons they were the first in line and their accurate and rapid rifle fire killed many of the enemy. As the battle progressed and the BEF started to withdraw, the 4th Battalion began to be surrounded. In the desperate fighting men from the ‘Diehards’ began to fall as German shells rained down, and their rifles began to jam with sand as they ran low on ammunition. During this struggle Private Harry Murphy was killed. The Germans buried him in a specially built Cemetery at St Symphorien Military, Mons. Here they buried friend and foe alike and even erected a memorial to the Middlesex Regiment.

From Huntingdonshire Heroes of the First World War by John Bell ISBN 0 946965 21 8. Letter to Mrs. Tassell William's wife from his Company Commander E.H. Spalding and another from his friend Alf. July 21st 1915. Dear Mrs. Tassell, It is with great regret that I have to write and tell you that your husband Pte. W. Tassell died from wounds recived whilst on duty last week in the trenches. You will no doubt by now have recieved official notice of this sad event, but as Company Commander I fell I must write and say how very much we all deplore his loss. He was an excellent soldier and very popular with all in his Company and his sad end is felt by us all. Our Chaplain buried him at Dicks Busch in a cemetery where so many of our good fellows have been laid to rest. I can only add that the officers and all his friends in the Company tend their sincere sympathy to you in this great trial. Yours truly, E. H. Spalding July 30 1915 Dear Mrs Tassell, How to write these few lines to you recounting the death of my poor old pal your dear husband I do not know, but I feel I must write and share with you in your sad trouble. I have thought much about you and the two little boys since it has happened, also of how you will miss him and how awful it will be never to see him again. I missed him then and miss him more and more now we are back in our resting place. For sometime I couldn't believe it was true while we were in the trenches but now we are out I know it to be true. It has upset me ever so much and I feel properly worn out and run down. Poor bill was more like a brother to me and a proper mate as true as steel. I often think I can still hea his voice and that I shall see him yet. He was shot through both legs with one of those deadly explosive bullets the rotten Germans use so freely and nobody but God Alone knows what pain he suffered. He spoke of you and the two boys several times as he lay there lingering and not long before he passed away he sent a message up to the trenches by a guide to me saying I wasn't to tell you. He lost a great deal of blood as the bullet pierced the main artery and it was owing to that and the reaction, shock and worry about you that he passed away poor fellow. Sending my deepest sympathy and may God guide and protect you and the children in the hour of trouble. Believe me to remain Bill's pal. Alf.
