UPWOOD WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 & Korean - Roll of Honour with detailed information

War Memorial, dedicated in January 1920 in the Lady Chapel (South Aisle). A mosaic beneath the window, depicting the crucifixion, designed by William Glasby, contains the names of 13 men of Upwood & Raveley parish who gave their lives in the Great War, together with four men who (as far as can be ascertained) were killed in flying accidents related to local airfields.

Beneath the mosaic on one small brass plate are the names of the two men from the parish who gave their lives in the Second World War. On another is the name of a soldier who died a prisoner of war in Korea.

WORLD WAR ONE

BRAYBROOK Fred
Born 1898 in Upwood, youngest of ten children of William and Mary Ann Braybrook of Upwood. Enlisted in Huntingdon as Private 1306, Hunts Cyclist Corp May 1915. Transferred to Private 39271, 1st Battalion, Royal Berkshire. Wounded on 13th November 1916 in right arm, sent to Rosemead Hospital in Wales where died on 22nd December 1916 from septic poisoning aged 18 years. Buried in Upwood cemetery with own family gravestone and CWGC stone alongside.
CORNEY Sidney
Born 9th July 1890. Served as Private 216331, 27th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regt). Died 21st August 1917, aged 27 yrs. Married to Ida E. Corney of 39 Field Terrace, Ramsey although attestation papers list her as 34 Little Whyte, Ramsey. According to his attestation papers he was living at 683 Sherbrooke St., Winnpeg, Canada and was born in Ramsey. By trade he was a butcher and belonged to the 100th Winnipeg Grenadiers. He enlisted 28th January 1916 in Winnipeg. According to his attestation papers he was 25 years 5½ months old when he enlisted, 5 feet 5½ inches tall, 35½ inch waist. Complexion fair, eyes grey, hair brown and his religion was Church of England. Death commemorated on the Canadian memorial at Vimy Ridge. DEIGHTON John Thomas
Baptised at Gt. Raveley school June 1872, eldest son of George and Ellen Deighton, thatcher. In 1901 working for his father George as a thatcher. Joined Territorials prior to outbreak of war. Joined 4th Beds. Died 15 June 1915 (from individual memorial plaque in church). No record on CWGC site or SDGW CD - believed to have died at home. Under investigation.
GIDDENS Frederick James
Born New England, Peterborough son of John and Hannah Giddens. Enlisted in Bedford 23rd March 1916 from Gt. Raveley, Private 27584, 4th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiemnt. Killed in action 13th November 1916 - reported in Hunts Post 29th December 1916 at the Battle of the Ancre. Commemorated in Ancre British Cemetery, BeaumontHamel.
HUGHES John Henry
Born 24 Dec 1894 son of Samuel and Selina Hughes of Upwood. Born and resident Upwood, enlisted at Ramsey - Private 73, 'C' Company, 1st Battalion, Huntingdon Cyclist Battalion, Army Cyclist Corps. Died at home on 4th January 1917 aged 22 years.
INGLE David Victor
Born 14 Oct 1898, youngest son of Albert and Martha Ingle, blacksmith. Enlisted Huntingdonshire Cyclists Bn no. 1298 before 14th May 1915 and transferred to 14th Bn Royal Warwiçks at Private no. 30199. Died 25 Jun 1918 aged 18 yrs. Commemorated on Bay 3 of Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais.
MOWBRAY Lesley St J.
[MOUBRAY on memorial] Captain, son of Col. Arthur & Elizabeth Mowbray of Upwood House. Served in Royal Berkshire Regiment. Survived Great War but contracted illness in trenches. Admitted to hospital where he died on 16th September 1919. Buried at Hythe, memorial service held at Upwood church.
MURFIN Cyril Arthur
Born in Upwood 25th December 1889, second son of Cornelius and Mary Kate Murfin, carpenter of Upwood. Enlisted in Huntingdon, resident Upwood. Was TR/10/6314, T.R. Battalion before joining 9th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps - Rifleman A/205116 and died of wounds on 27th March 1918 near St. Quentin. Commemorated on Grand-Seraucourt British Cemetery.
PIERSON Ernest Alfred
Driver died 26th August 1917 in France - from postcard with his photograph. Born Hitchin, Hertfordshire, enlisted Huntingdon. Driver 140308 'T' Bty, Royal Horse Artillery. Commorated at Zuydcoote Military Cemetery.
SHELTON George William
Born 1884, eldest son of Elijah & Fanny Shelton of Upwood. Married to Albina Shelton. Private 19359 of 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Born Ramsey, enlisted Huntingdon, resident Ramsey Heights. Killed in action 16th June 1915 and commemorated at Le Touret Memorial in Pas de Calais. His brother Tom (born 1891) also served in 3rd Northants and was badly wounded in 1914 but survived.
SHELTON Reuben
Private 27709, 4th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action 25th May 1918. Born Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, enlisted Watford, resident Upwood. Buried in Aveluy Wood Cemetery (Somme). Grave I. H. 15.
SINCLAIR Harry Cecil
Born 26 August 1888, eldest son of Harry & Elizabeth Sinclair, carrier of Upwood. Married Laura Thompson and had daughter named May. Joined the 4th Battalion, Essex Regiment as Private 201975 but was serving as Private 235074, 1st Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment when he died of wounds on 26th October 1917. Born and resident Upwood, enlisted Huntingdon. Commemorated in Godewaersvelde British Cemetery near Poperinge.
WEST Edgar John
[List as Edgar Joseph on SDGW] Born in Broughton circa 1892, eldest son of Joseph and Emma West, of Ivy Cottage, Great Graveley, Hunts, and moved to Gt. Raveley around 1900. Enlisted in Bedford 1st June 1915 in 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment - Private 20777. Killed in action 18th October 1916 aged 23 yrs. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face 2 C

Not native to Upwood area - it appears these four men were casualties of an air crash on Saturday 7th September 1918.

possibly Robert K Gray died Saturday 2 November 1918, age 25 - Corporal 105154, 191st (Night) Training Squadron, Royal Air Force. Son of John Gray, of 2, Crofton Avenue, Dunlaoghaire.Buried in Dean's Grange Cem, Dublin. Grave S. M. 12.

PARKS Albert Ernest
2nd Lieutenant, 191st (Night) Training Squadron, Royal Air Force who died Saturday 7th September 1918 aged 21 yrs. Son of Alfred Edward, and Rose Annie Parks of 52 Redbridge Lane, Wanstead, Essex. Commemorated in Upwood Cemetery.
THOMPSON Adam Howie
2nd Lt, 4th Bn Gordon Highianders attd. 191st (Night) Training Squadron, Royal Air Force. Son of late A.H. and Isabella Thompson of Seaview, Boddam, Aberdeenshire and husband of Marh Kathleen Stuart Thompson (formerly Young) of 34 Church St. Antrim. Commemorated in Upwood Cemetery.
SECOND WORLD WAR
BROWN Harold James
[Known as Hadge] Only son of Arthur & Alice Brown. Driver T/155536 - 189 Field Amb. RAMC died 3rd August 1941 age 22 yrs. A Prisoner of War, died from wounds in 5th Australian General Hospital, Korrinia and buried in Athens Cemetery - Phaleron War Cemetery.
MASON Preston
Son of Arther & Nellie Mason, farm foreman at Middle Farm, Woodwalton and married to Elsie Mason. Driver 113575-593 Army Troops Coy, RE died 22 September 1941 age 22 yrs. Burial register at Upwood shows he was on military service in Orkney.
KOREAN WAR
SHELTON [Frederick] William
Private 5885232, Gloucestershire Regiment. Died in captivity, Korea 1st August 1951. Aged 30. Born 12 April 1921. No known grave. Commemorated on UN Memorial Wall, Pusan, Korea.
