              Florence Annie Newman (b. 1884) Resident of Ramsey RD Warboys, Huntingdonshire at the time of enlistment. Enlisted at Huntingdon on 21st October 1914 as Cyclist 693, Hunts Cyclist Battalion.  
              Transferred to the Regular Army on 29th July 1916 and landed in 
              France on the 30th July. A period of Regimental training took place following heavy losses in July until the 18th Aug when they moved to Orvillers post. 18th & 19th Fatigue parties at Orillers post, 5 killed, 7 wounded. 20th & 21st A & C posted to Ration trench the remainder fatigue & digging parties. 1 killed, 28 wounded. 22nd & 23rd R & R and training Bouzencourt. 24th moved to bivouac near Aveluy and provided working parties on Skyline trench losing 4 killed, 20 wounded, 1 missing. 27th Aug the battalion prepared to assault an indistinct trench halfway between the jumping off point at Skyline trench and the German front line Constant trench. D & C companies took part. The barrage obliterated the objective so they advanced into their own barrage on constant trench, D Company went too far left and got lost. C company took Constant trench and held it until pushed out by German counter attacks. There were 10 killed, 150 wounded, 73 missing. Arthur Wilfred Newman died 27th August 1916, aged 22 missing in this action. A friend reported that they had taken the trench but were counterattacked by the Germans and were pushed back out, as they withdrew Arthur was shot or bayoneted in the back and was not seen again | ||||
