The memorial is to be found in the United Reformed Church in East Street, Hythe. The memorial is in the form of a marble plaque affixed to the wall of the church. It lists 14 names by initial and surname.

Percy John

[Listed on memorial as NICHOLLS but actual name NICKOLLS] Guardsman 25521, Died 6th August 1917. Born Hythe. Enlisted Folkestone. Commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Ieper, Belgium. See also Hythe

Percy is recorded with the surname Nickoils on SDGW. Nickolls with the CWGC and Nicholls on the MIC entry. It would seem that the casualty commemorated on the Hythe town civic war memorial is also Percy but spelt Nichols.

O’CONNEL

[Spelt O’CONNELL elsewhere] Lieutenant, 4th Battalion, Nigeria Regiment, West African Field Force. Died between 4th August 1914 and 31st August 1921. Commemorated on the Ibadan Memorial, Nigeria, West Africa.

360 casualties here have no known grave. They all died in Africa during the war years.
