Albert
Arthur |
Sergeant 1050, 5th Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) {From
WW1 Medal Rolls Index Card]. He was sent to the Asiatic Front 9th
December 1915. He was reassigned as 202873, East Kent Regiment at
some point. He was discharged unfit on 28th February 1917 or 20th
March 1917.
Albert
was clearly a man who died of wounds or disease after discharge
from the army. The trustees of the memorial allowed his name to
go forward on the basis that his death was caused or aggravated
by his war service. This case warrants further investigation as
it is still possible for Albert’s name to be added to the CWGC
war death index. His death certificate may hold clues… His death
is registered in the Maidstone Registration District in the July
to September Quarter 1918, aged 31. Albert Arthur Benz is listed
in the 1911 census as being married for 2 years, to Ellen Kate
(nee Preston) with one daughter, Mabel Louise, he was a farm labourer,
born Stoke Newington, London, resident Howland Road, Marden. His
attestation papers say he was born in Stoke Newingtoon, that he
enlisted aged 25 years 7 months and that he was resident in Howland
Road, Marden. He was 5 feet 9½ inches, girth 38 inches.
He first enlisted 4th December 1912. At this time he had a second
daughter Dorothy May. When discharged his wifer had moved to 2
Albion Road, Marden.
