ALVINGHAM WESLEYAN WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is located next door to the old village on the front of the Wesleyan Methodist chapel, Highbridge Road, Alvingham, in the form of a Great War memorial plaque. This is a Roll of Honour and only two of the sixteen men listed died in the Great War. The memorila is in the form of a white marble tablet set into the brickwork of the outside wall of the chapel. It was unveiled 30 October 1921 by Major F.J.M. Ingoldby, the service was conducted by the Rev. G.C. Main.

Sydney Arnold

Private 14624, 8th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 3 July 1916. Aged 19. Enlisted Louth, resident Alvingham. Son of John and Elizabeth Mary Wright; brother of Mr. L. M. Wright, of The Elms, Alvingham, Louth, Lincs. Enlisted 1914. His mother died shortly after his death, her grave in the churchyard of Church of St Mary Alvingham commemorates him. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 1 C.
