BENNIWORTH WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is to be found within St Julian;s Church, Benniworth. The memorial covers World War 1 only and bears 6 names, it takes the form of a rectangular brass plaque with inset black lettering for the inscription abive which is a Latin cross, engraved. There are two other personal memorials within the church, the first is to a man who died in World War 1 who appears on the the memorial and the second to a man who died in World War 2.

Private 45843. 147th Coy, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), formerly 5503 Gloucestershire Regiment. Died of wounds 3rd November 1916, aged 24 years. Husband of Dorothy Nellie Oliver of Spring Bank, Benniworth, Lincs. Enlisted Aldershot, Hants. Commemorated FONCQUEVILLERS MILITARY CEMETERY. I.K.31.

Riflemen R/3822. 13th Battalion, Kings Royal Rifle Corps. Died of wounds 23rd April 1917. Son of Frederick and Alice Shepherd. Born Edlington, Lincs, enlisted Nottingham, Notts and resident Benniworth, Lincs. Commemorated AUBIGNY COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION. II.B.80.

Charles

Private 9997. 6th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died of wounds 25th July 1917, aged 29 years. Son of John and Elizabeth Lee. Born Wickenby, enlisted Lincoln and resident Benniworth, Lincs. Commemorated GWALIA CEMETERY. I.D.29.

KENT

Harold

Private 40311. 2/5th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, formerly 293586 Royal Army Service Corps. Killed in action 16th September 1917, aged 20 years. Son of Charles H and Annie E Kent of Skirbeck Farm, Benniworth, Lincs. Born Benniworth and enlisted Horncastle, Lincs. Commemorated VLAMERTINGHE NEW MILITARY CEMETERY. IX.G.23.

LEE

Charles Harold

2nd Lieutenant. 249th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Son of George S and Annie Lee. Killed in action 20th September 1917. Commemorated HOOGE CRATER CEMETERY. XXI.A.9.

To the glory of God and in memory of Charles Harold Lee BSC. 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Garrison Artillery. Second son of the Rev George S Lee, Rector of this parish. Killed in action 20th September 1917, near Ypres. This brass is placed by his widow.

WATTAM

William

Private 265565. 2/5th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 21st March 1918. Born North Willingham and enlisted Louth, Lincs. Commemorated ARRAS MEMORIAL. Bay 3 and 4.

Jack

In loving memory of Jack Harness. Police Constable and Sergeant, Royal Artillery who died for his country June 1944, prisoner in Japan, aged 26 years.

Gunner 845755 (Sergeant on memorial inscription above). 122nd Field Regiment, Royal Artillery. Died 22nd June 1944. Commemorated YOKOHAMA WAR CEMETERY. Brit Sec. Q.C.8.
